A rick is 16inches by 4ft by 8ft, if you throw wood into a pickup you must make the pile alittle higher in the center the bed side height to make it a rick

That said if you add 18inch sides to the bed and stack it in tight rounding the centers of each row up you will get 5 ricks in or 1 & 2/3 cords leaving the tail gate open.....

A rick or rank of wood, also called a face cord, is usually a stack 4’ high by 8’ long by 14” to 18” wide. There is no standard width – it is just the length of the pieces in that particular stack.

4’ x 8’ x 12” = ¼ cord
4’ x 8’ x 16” = ⅓ cord
4’ x 8’ x 24” = ½ cord

A cord is 128 cubic feet 4' x 4' x 8'

A rick measures whatever anybody WANTS it to measure. Same for any firewood measure other than a cord. A cord is the ONLY legally defined measure for firewood. As mentioined, 128 cubic feet.

So, you could prepay for a couple of ricks of firewood, and get a wheelbarrow load delivered, and there would be nothing you could do about it. The seller simply says, "That's what 2 ricks means to me, and my definition is as good as anybodys."

And he's right.

Ricks are defined as a third of a cord I forget where but I know I seen it somewhere while spending 4 years getting my degree in Forestry from U of K (go Big Blue)

Note too that the first legal measurement is what defines a cord. That is, if the wood is stacked on his properly such that it can be measured accurately (down to the inch on each dimension), then that is a cord. If not, then the first legal measurement is when you have stacked it properly and measured it. The reason is, that depending on stacking the space taken up can vary by up to 10% .

He can't just have eyeballed it.

I had a old instructor at a field station once tell me when stacking hardwood to measure a cord there should be spaces and gaps but only to this in his own words

Not to big a dog or cat could squeeze in but still big enough for a old squirl.....

From the site referenced above:

It does not matter a whit what other terms are employed. What matters is what terms are legally defined in the state in which you live.

If you'll check your State's statutes, I don't think you'll find rick, face cord, or anything OTHER than simply "cord" defined as a legal unit of measure in any state in the Union.

Absent a legal definition, it means whatever you want it to mean, as far as business transactions are concerned.

I thought missouri had a law that wood had to be sold by the cord. not that anyone pays attention to it--------

Hi~

http://muextension.missouri.edu/expl...try/g05452.htm very informative

Despite the lax procedures frequently followed, cordwood must, by law, be sold by the cord or fractional part of a cord. It must be accompanied by a bill of sale in accordance with requirements of the Missouri Department of Agriculture's Weights and Measures Division. As defined by the National Conference on Weights and Measures and Missouri rules and regulations, a gross cord of firewood is the amount of wood, ranked and well stowed, contained in a space of 128 cubic feet. "Ranked and well stowed" means pieces are placed in a line or row with pieces touching on their ends and parallel to each other and stacked in a compact manner.

Other descriptions of volumes of cordwood such as rick, rank, pickup load, and face cord should not be used. The only legal terms are "cord" and fractions of a cord.

I dont think our part of MO knows that law. A couple of years ago, we bought firewood by the cord but that was from someone who moved here from IL. They are no longer selling firewood...

It appears that the choices are a rick, a rank or a pickup load. A receipt? I think you need to be able to read and write to provide a receipt, dont you?...

I would get it by the pick up load because it's easier to verify.

Laws about cord wood probably have less to do with reality than the speed limit laws. :baby04:
