What kind of snake?

I nearly stepped on this baby snake a few minutes ago. I took a picture, & was trying to decide if I should kill it or not, when it went under the house.
Does anybody know what kind it is? I was thinking it might be a king snake, but it looks like it kinda has a diamond shaped head.

Well, to tell the truth, it took a minute for me to figure that out. I just stood there thinking "What the heck IS that?"
I don't think I've ever seen one like that before.

It is not a copperhead. They have a pattern that looks like saddlebags slung over the back. Whatever it is will definitely clean out the mice around your house.

Looks to me like a water snake. They flatten their heads like that when they feel threatened.

water snakes are often mistaken for copperheads.

Umm, I did have to get pretty close, because it was so small, & I didn't really want to stay any longer that I had to.

It's head looks very pit-viperish. Could it be a baby rattlesnake?

OD is in texas, those pics are from washington. I think there are lots of varieties of rattlesnakes and they look different in different areas.

We've never seen any rattlesnakes around here, but it looks an awful lot like one of those. I wish I had just killed it instead of thinking about whether it was a good one or not.

Looks like a little rattler to me. The best way to tell a poisonous from a nonpoisonous is to get real close and look at their eyes. If they have slitted pupils like a cat and you get really, really sick from the bite then it's poisonous. If they have round pupils and you don't die from getting bitten then it was nonpoisonous.

You can see the saddle bag pattern on the copperhead laying on the log.

Ha Ha Ha Ha ..... I think we need a close up picture of just it's eyes

Really ... a better picture would help.

What kind of snake....

It looks like a baby black snake...they show a pattern that goes dark as they mature...I've seen them around SW Mo. & looked them up in a snake book to identify them.....GrannieD

I think I found it-Thanks, GrannieD. I did a search for Texas juvenile black snake, & got this. It's a baby black rat snake.
Dh said he thought it was a timber rattler, & I was about ready to move away from here.

Looks like a young Rat Snake to me. They do tend to loose those markings as they mature.
Go on a little snake hunt, there could be more around. Be cautious though, just in case it is a Rattler.
