Siding or Stucco?

Our house has warped, peeling masonite siding. We found out there was a recall but we are a few months too late to get in on it. We had someone out to give us an estimate to replace it with vinyl siding, and they want $15,000! Most siding places don't want to sell it to you to do it yourself, and Lowes, HD, etc. have a very limited selection of colors. The house is a pale yellow/ivory right now. I would like it to be a buttery yellow. Hardi siding has to be painted, but I am prone to change my mind about colors and it would be pretty difficult to change colors on vinyl siding.

Another thing we have thought about is stucco. I really like the look, but having no experience with it I am a little reluctant. I've been reading about all the different kinds and everyone wants you to buy their kind, so of course it is the best. Humidity is an issue around here, so some kinds are better suited than others. I am curious to see how Sidepasser's project turns out.
Anyway, what would be the best way to cover the outside of our house? Anyone have experiences, opinions, etc. on doing it yourself?

BTW....we are planning on doing a standing seam roof sometime in the near future as well. I can't decide which would look better with the roof. Decisions, decisions, decisions!!!!!

FWIW,I HATE siding, would take stucco any day.In my case,it was TONS less maintenance.

BTW,I had a buddy who was a Lather(when we did an addition for Mom).I kept the stuff mixed and he applied it.Went fast and was really cheap to do,got very lucky on that one.

Can anyone recommend any good resources for learning how to do stucco? The pros and cons of the different kinds?
Thanks,
