Anyone got info on Rock/Crete Fence Cornerposts?

Hello Everyone!
This is my first post after lurking as a guest for about a year. We just purchased 10 ac. and I'm so excited. When we fence it I would like to make the old cornerposts I see sometimes when driving through the country. They look like they are formed from concrete and fieldstone. They usually have metal rods implanted to anchor the fence to. Not sure if anyone knows what I'm talking about but I'd like to find more info on how to make them. Do they set into the ground or just on top? Are they made using slipform type methods? Anyone with any knowledge of these that could give me some info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I'm not certain how they are built - I suspect there are multiple ways -but they certainly do look nice. I would suggest, however that when you construct one that you make darn sure you have it where you want it (and entirely on your property) cause I've got a feeling they would be a b**** to move....

You could probably call the local Mason's Guild or Hall and get good info.

If you could get a picture and post it, I'd like to see one.

Congratulations on the new 10 acres.
What will this fence keep inside? Is it more or less decoration?

Are these concrete posts just on the corners? I have seen some smaller posts that are tapered starting at the bottom around 10" to 6" on top with holes to slide the rails in. I also recall some corner posts that were a lot bigger.

A slip form may work well on the larger corner posts. It may be easier to make a mold for smaller posts. If you plan a straight line fence, you'll have to bury the posts, or make a footer for each.

I used 8"x8"x60" to calculate volume, 2.2 cu ft. That would be close to 300 pounds. That's 5 small bags of concrete per post!

Zig zag fences do not need as much support as straight line fences. This would allow you to make hollow concrete posts, and save on cement and weight.

Do you think digging out for a concrete footer (pad) and then using concrete block about five high( fill with concrete and rebar) will work to form your corners and then cover with wire mesh, mortar and then use field stone to cover by buttering the ends of the flat side of the stone?

These are all such good things to think about. I probably need to go down to the little resteraunt where all the old farmers hang out for coffee and see if any of them know how they were made exactly. My main concern is what is in the middle? Are there rocks all the way through, maybe really large ones in the middle, or is it formed around a fencepost or something? I know where some are located and I will try to grab some pictures and post on here in the next day or so. I plan on doing a sturdy fence around the perimeter of the whole property then using electric net or wire to divide off sections for rotational grazing. When I get some pics or more info I'll post them.
