Broken metatarsal

Friday I broke the fifth metatarsal on my foot. Owwww. Doc put on a splint then an ace band to hold it on. I rewrapped it today because it got too loose. What concerns me is the that my foot is still quite swollen, though not as bad as before. Is it supposed to look deformed for a while? Seems like I'm holding it at a weird angle too. Is this normal?

My mom just broke her foot on Friday, working on my new house at the acreage! Actually she tripped on a twig, and twisted her foot, and boom. (Take home lesson: drink your milk when you are young!).

Hers is in a partial cast and she's supposed to stay off it for two weeks. It's pretty swollen, but goes down at night when she's had it up and isn't walking around at all.

The splint should hold it at the proper angle. If it feels wrong, though, go back and get it looked at - it wouldn't be impossible for something to have shifted or just not gotten put on quite right the first time. And yup, it'll be swollen for awhile. Are you taking Advil or something similar at regular intervals? That'll help with both the pain and the swelling and it should heal faster.

Hope you have someone to cater to you! My son has been running errands for Gram, he loves feeling so important.

I'm seeing an orthopedic guy tomorrow so I'm sure he will notice anything out of place. Taking Vicodin for pain and that helps a lot for a few hours.

Unfortunately I live alone and have 2 dogs to walk, although our walks are really short at the moment.

I broke the fifth metatarsal on my right foot when I was in high school. OUCH!!!

You have my sympathy. It's not a great place for a break, because no matter which way you step, IT HURTS!!!

Here's to fast healing!

Yes, in high school skipping 3 steps broke a metatarsal bone

I started to go into shock and it hurt horribly......until the doctor put a cast on it. Once the cast went on, the pain left. I had the cast on for the traditional 6-9 weeks ( can't remember which now). Then, I was up and walking fine.

My suggestion---get a cast on it. The doctor asked me if I wanted a cast---I do remember looking at him as if he was nuts. I was in terrible pain---and he did put a cast on it. :-)
