"IT" Happened

Here we are on our homestead of one year. Last night someone tried to break-in to the house. We are still renovating so some of the outside lights aren't working and dh is out of town. Before dh left we went to take a gun safety class and were going to buy a pistol, but didn't get the pistol bought before he left. What happened is that I heard a thump in the front and then a sort of tapping or maybe even knocking, but very faintly. All of a sudden, I heard the front screen door open and someone try to open the front door. I yelled out and said, "May I help you?" DUH!! Can you believe I was polite? My mom taught me to always be polite. He said, "UH, oh, yeah I think someone I know used to stay here." I say, "you've got the wrong house." He leaves slowly and slowly backs out of the drive, but sits out front for a long while. The scary part is the timing. I am such a creature of habit that I always go out to close up the chickens at about the same time every night. Last night my kids were home to visit and we closed them up early, thank God, or he would have been trying to get in while I was outside and would have been in the house when I returned. The sheriff has given me several pointers. I am changing all the locks to double keyed and adding more lights with motion sensors outside. DH is coming home tonight and cancelling his trip. What a wake-up call. I wanted to share so that everyone is alert. We live in a wonderful, safe area, but should always be prepared!!!

If you can't get a dog--get a recording of a dog you can play loudly. You can buy these if you don't have a friend whose dog you can record.

I hope things work out. You can never be too careful.

I love your good manners - probably totally disconcerted him! Thank God there were no injuries and nothing got taken.

Unfortunately there is no wonderful safe areas anymore anywhere. I'm happy for you that everything worked out OK.
As far as home protection goes a pistol might not be your gun of best choice. A simple shotgun, preferably one with a short barrel works best. Shotgun or not you can still use your manners when you shout I'm a woman and I've got a gun from behind the door. No person in their right mind would proceed any furthur after hearing that statement, especially a man that knows anything about guns and women.

I agree a polite ice breaker is fine- followed quickly with " (Husbands name) get your gun".

Getting a license plate number would be a good thing to do. I'm sure the Sheriff would be happy to check the backround of somebody who just walks into a place he hasn't been in a year (if ever).

I'd think about getting myself a target cube, hitting it a dozen times, and leaving it at the front door (that is until you get your firearm of course).

Be Well,

Rick

Get the breed of dog that you've always thought about getting. Border collies are nice. They have a big dog sound and are very protective and smart. Ours is black and white. I watched him one night when our geese got out. He laid down and actually hid his white parts. His nose and paws and tip of his tail. Then he grabbed one as it got near. Too smart? maybe. We won't let him near our computer. He doesn't shut it down properly when he's done.

In most places you can buy mace right over the counter. I beleive wal mart even carries it but most hunting places do carry the one you can use against bears. Also ask the police if there is a local safety course ( akido or karate) sometimes they gear the class towards women. A freind of mine took the class and two weeks later a guy tried to rape her. He limped away with a broken nose, two busted teeth and two sqaushed nuggets! Remember you can't always grab the gun when needed but you can possibly get away and go get the gun and phone. Stay safe and enjoy the homestead

Glad everything worked out.

Can't appreciate our dogs enough, no one can get near without us knowing. I wouldn't live without them.

Hello,

Very scary what happened to you! I have never had anone break in, but I did have someone attempt to mug me in Spokane, WA. Ten years later, I still feel sorry for that guy because I kicked his ass! and I'm a whimp!

You should read up on statistics of how many homeowners are shot with their own guns! It's not good!

I second the motion that learning some self defense it a much wiser approach. That way no matter where you are you can defend yourself.

Just think what could've happened if you were outside and he'd found the gun in your house. It's that easy! Guns are not the answer!
Watch bowling for columbine and think about it!

Excuse me but I said she SHOULD have the gun as well, and you should read some of the info. telling of how many home owners are still here because they knew how to use their own gun and did so. There's a couple of times I wouldn't be here or would have been raped had I not had a gun.

Yep, get those classes done with, and get yourselve's a gun! Also having a dog is a cheap alarm system and gives you a little more safe feeling. Sorry this happened to you, especially when your husband wasn't home. Scary stuff!

We haven't had anyone up to the house yet, but someone broke our lock on the gate when we were gone for a few hours, and we have had someone drive up the driveway half way. They hit the steep part in the fall when it was raining, and were spinning wheels really loud. That is one reason why we love our steep driveway, because if you don't practice getting up it, you won't get up it, even with a 4 wheel drive. Even they made it up...they would have been met with 2 dogs, and a family armed.

Self defense is fine, and it will make you more confident, but would not protect you if the intruder had a gun or knife, or a vase he picked up. I rather take the chance that the intruder got to MY gun first, then to be left unprotected!

Don't waste your breath... Anyone with sigs and a "location" like that is definitely for gun control. That way we can all be helpless.

We've had lots of these threads lately ending up with the pro's and cons of gun ownership.
I'm so sorry that happened to you. Maybe it's a wake up call.
If you decide to get a gun, get a shot gun. Practice, practice, practice. Do not get one if you don't feel you can use it on a 2 legged varmit.

The "May I help you?" must have thrown him for a loop! It showed him that not only were you home, but weren't intimidated by him. Good job!

I also suggest the shotgun for home defense. A shoulder-fired gun is easier to keep pointed in a safe direction.

My wife and I both carry pistols away from home, but in three separate instances when we had to deal with intruders/burglars, it was the sight of a long gun that got them running. (we don't live in gang country anymore, now the shotgun is for 4-legged predators)

Yep, you saved your life with good manners! Way to Go! I second the dog, if you can handle the herding dog mentality a border collie woould be a terror to a thief they are fast! even wielding a gun he'd have trouble beading in before he goes down.

Bowling for Columbine

Scotty;

Bowling for Columbine was a piece of propaganda, pure trash.
Even in a blue state people should be able to understand that.

My ex used to say that about women and guns !

When Roger used to be gone Monday thru Friday, someone drove in and tunred around in our driveway twice. We got two motion detecters wired to lights AND a nine-millimeter gun! Every night, before turning the lights off, the gun came out and the safety was off. It was right within reaching space of my pillow. If someone broke into my house and was coming into the bedroom, they wouldn't be looking for a cup of coffee. They'd be dead meat as I know how to shoot and 15 rounds would just about to it!

Bottom line:Get a gun and learn how to use it. (Which reminds me - I gotta do some practising soon!)

I'd rather have a gun and not need it, then to need a gun and not have it.
