Real butter and the heart-healthy "spreads" made with olive oil are the only things we buy any more. I don't even see much margarine on the shelves any more.

Margarine clogs arteries. Butter doesn't.

Does anyone remember when they called it Oleo Margarine? Or how it used to come with a little packet of yellow coloring that you mixed in to make it look like butter? Lots of folks around here still call margarine "Oleo."

My grandma used to talk about Oleo Margarine. Of course, those were dirty words in her house - she lived on a farm. Butter was the ONLY thing allowed.

Yes! I remember that and we still call it oleo, but we only eat real butter anymore.

I still use margarine in some recipes but for table use we switched back to butter.

We watched a report on TV the other day that said that medical science is now revising their thinking about fat in our diet. Fat, they said, is what makes us feel full and when we eat lower fat items, we tend to eat more in order to feel satisfied thus consuming more calories than we need. If we eat a little fat in our diets, good fats, we tend to feel fuller with just a recommended serving and tend to eat less. They associated this trend with the increase in obesity in Americans. We are trying to eat healthier and in doing so, are eating more to feel full. I experimented with this idea one day when I got hungry in the middle of the afternoon and pulled out a package of crackers. After eating 4 crackers and was reaching for a 5th still feeling hungry, I got out a jar of peanut butter and made a couple of peanut butter crackers to eat. I felt the difference immediately. The hunger pangs went away and I felt satisfied.

With that idea in mind, we switched to butter.
