Noise!

Do your ears ever get tired? I mean actually hurt from manmade noises?? I have wonderful hearing which is a blessing BUT there are times when I relish complete quiet ! My husband is very hard of hearing. So our TV, radio and computer are wayyyy to loud. He has a CPAP machine which makes noise all night long. The ac/heat unit runs continually, the water dripping in the sink , the sounds of the fans running, dogs barking, cat's bell jingling, riding in the truck I hear every squeak/rattle/ tweak that it puts off. ... There always seems to be something making noise ..... I so love the early mornings, after he leaves for work, I turn off the fans, ac, put a cloth in the sink to catch the drip, the dogs and cat are sound asleep, chickens haven't started the morning noise ! I can open windows and be at peace...Please don't get me wrong.. I am very thankful for the grands laughter, the fact that I have water and ac/heat and I love that my husband can sleep more comfortable and me not be afraid he won't start back breathing 100's of times an hour ... BUT there are times when I need quiet!!! How about you??

Sometimes, to me, silence is roaring... especially since I have some ringing in my ears at times.. Some times, I love the silence.. Other times, i's almost painful... at least with a little man made noise, it covers up the roar..

There's one noise that I cannot stand and that's DH's TV. He keeps it on a comfortable sound level but when he watches certain shows I have to leave the room. Those shows would be the ones where there's a screeching woman judge doing all the talking, or some cartoon like voice that's on the higher end of what's uncomfortable for me to process. Other than that I'm comfortable with most noises.

I live in a place of relative a quiet but it's an amazing relief when the power first goes out and nothing but natual sounds are heard. A tension goes away that I'm normally ignore. No fridge kicking on or pump running or lights buzzing.

This was my first thought too, I actually love it when we have a power outage. We get about 3 major ones a year on a bad year. We have a gas stove so I can still cook, but the background noise that is always with us is gone........just silence, I find it so peaceful and restful.

My husband needs "white noise" to sleep so we always have a fan running, summer and winter. I too like that absence of "man-made" noise when I'm lucky enough to get it!

Yes.

Headphones. They saved our marriage and/or kept me out of jail.

A small set to plug in his computer. No more sudden blasting of videos.

Dual sets for the TV. He can watch programs that I don't want to see, while I am reading a book or doing things around the house. When we watch together, we can each adjust the volume as we like.

Cpap, I love. Not only does it save him thrashing, snore-roaring and getting up several times in the night, but once used to it, became white noise to me.

After 12 years, he is finally understanding that there are times I just NEED quiet. The quieter I get, the less he stomps around. Or I just go out onto our deck and watch the bird feeders.

DW's CPAP (APAP actually) is very quiet. Does your DH have and use a hearing aid? Otherwise headphones or earbuds for him. Dripping sinks are an easy fix.

My sister's house is one of the noisiest places I've ever been...loud tv on all the time (that no one ever seems to be watching), dogs barking, phone constantly ringing, niece and her daughter shouting at each other...sometimes we make an excuse and leave just to save our sanity. I appreciate our quiet house!

Sometimes I listen to music at work and then when I get into my car I have to turn the radio off because my ears hurt. I get a lot of silence in my life though. Too much probably.

City noise is harde for me to deal with! When we go to the city, the constant noise from traffic and general city noise gets me tense! Then there is the canned music in the stores.

I can't wait to get out of town.

It's pretty quiet here at home. Dh is hard of hearing so I have to tell him to turn down the volume on TV diring the day. His Cpap machine only makes noise if it's not adjusted to his face and, after 35 years, I've gotten used to the fan running so he can sleep.

I feel the same way. My work place is full of non-stop noise. My elderly and very hard of hearing mother lives with me and cranks the TV up to the point where I think all my hair is going to fall out. Hearing aides would be a blessing but she refuses...sigh. She has other qualities so I can overlook the vanity...but oh, sometimes I just wanna go stick my head under the pillow. She will turn it down if I ask. "Sorry!"

I love to go outside and work in my garden but sometimes there is no peace there, either. I live in the city and the people across the alley from me have 8 children. Yes, eight. They have a squeaky swing set and a trampoline. One of their teens likes to kind of jog on the trampoline while listening to tunes. Round and round she goes with that trampoline squeaking at every bounce. I once bought them a can of WD-40. Sometimes I repeat to myself, "Oh, listen to the joyful sounds of children playing...." They really are nice kids...just oh so loud.

I actually brought a pair of those ear protectors (the little foam ones you stick in your ears) to work. They help. I am a supervisor in a call center and the constant din of voices all day is often hard to bear.

I have to run a fan full blast over night or the birds (or snoring) wake me up! We have fans, motors, etc. running 24/7. And when there is a power outage I never sleep very well. If somehow I could get complete silence - no birds, snoring, dogs, cars, etc. I might like it for sleeping.

My husband doesn't wear hearing aids. Even tho I have asked . He retires in one year and I have told him -- he must get them before retirement! It is sad that he misses much of what our grands say to him.. I have to repeat it and it loses something when it is screamed at him!

I'm your polar opposite, I can't stand quite. For one thing its never really quite for me because I have 'ringing' in my ears all the time although ringing doesn't describe what I hear. I don't notice it if there is background noise and a lot of the times when its quite BUT once I do notice it, it'll drive me buggy! Its really bad when I'm trying to sleep in a quite room and start thinking about it.

So there's always 'noise' of some type around me. A fan running, the radio or even just the background noise of being outside working masks it.

I get a headache just thinking about going to town. It is quiet here. I can hear the rain on the roof (there was a drip from the gutter this morning) from the dew. I hear the creek. I just heard a hummingbird in the mint by the front door. We have solar and microhydro elec. I can hear the microhydro generator. I went to the farm yesterday, sitting under the pavilion, I could hear the fish jumping. I hear a turkey hen and her brood, right now. It is soooo NOISY....sorry

One thing that gets me is the phone ringing all day. The randomness of it is maddening. And half the calls are telemarketing. Of the other 50%, rarely is there one that is for me. I now apply a telemarketing technique to the telemarketers: I simply start talking non-stop right in their mid-sentence. I say "I am sorry I can not talk right now have a nice day (click)".
