pneumonia

dang, I've been running my mom all over for tests and appts to prepare her for her complete shoulder replacement surgery tomorrow, and I caught myself pneumonia..

thank God I had an antibiotic here and knew what was coming on right away ..with first symptoms.. so I started antibiotic right away, but alas, I can't take my 93 year old mom for her surgery tomorrow (sister has volunteered)..would be afraid she would catch the pneumonia and die.

I'm not doing too badly..did rest a lot today and am fighting fever headaches and a cough..but i'm glad I caught it quickly.

mom's surgery 8:30 am..hope she does well

Glad you got started on the anti-biotics. Rest and fluids, can't clear your lungs without plenty of fluids. Hope your Mom does well.

Did your doctor do an X-ray? If you self-diagnosed you could be doing yourself a disservice by starting antibiotics on your own. Were you checked for the flu?

bacterial pnemonia, have it about once a year, very familiar with it. When i was a kid my dr told me that certain people just have chronic pneumonia..I've had pneumonia shots but they only work for a couple years and then i get it again, had it last year about the time, guess I'm just really susceptible to it for some reason..I did ask my dr for a pneumonia booster in Nove and was told I didn't need it..obviously they were wrong..

My mom's surgery went really well, will come home tomorrow

My fever is starting to let up so maybe I'm not contageous anymore??

I also get pneumonia once a year. It can really put you down if your not careful. Don't breath any cold air, eat or drink anything cold. Matter of fact I just got done with my nebulizer. I helps you breath I only use it if I get pneumonia. I did take a z-pac which knocked it out in 4-5 days. It's not fun I really can sympathies. The only good thing was I did get a lot of time to write on my new book

I strongly suggest you see your doctor. Bacterial peumonia one year, or even five, doesn't mean it is bacterial the next time. If you don't get diagnosed by your physician he cannot document that you had it with certainty which makes it less likely you can get the shot more often than usual. For example, last I heard was that Medicare only pays for one shot after age 65.

The flu and pneumonia can have similar symptoms. Please be careful and I hope both of you feel better soon.

I have never had a dr. check for viral or bacterial sinus infections. I have never had lab tests. Not saying self diagonosis is right but dr. don't do much more sometimes than walgreens.

I agree with okiemom I have had pneumonia more times than I can count but never had it tested. They listen to my lungs and in 10 minutes I'm out of the hospital with a prescription and a bill, lol. Some times I don't bother going but takes quite a while for the body to fight it off unless it kills you first. Best to get the Dr to check in out and give you a bill. I guess they could always use a few extra bucks.

Okie, Walgreens doesn't have anything OTC that'll clear a bacterial sinus infection. Most of thee time doctors don't even treat sinus infections for two or three weeks because viral sinus infections tend to be self limiting.

Rustic, I've never met a doctor who would diagnose pneumonia without some testing. Did you listen to your own breath sounds with a stethoscope?

There are things you just can't self diagnose.

Everyone needs the pneumonia shot!!!
Not when you have it of course, but go get it when you're well.

My wife is a Critical Care Nurse she listened to my lungs. She thought they were full also. She sees pneumonia on a daily basis working in the hospital. It's usually a secondary issue in most cases for patients that can't walk. Only way to really tell is to test for it or x-ray. With my history of lung issues and pneumonia I think my Dr can make an educated decision. It's also much cheaper for the hospital to just treat. Wrong or right most Dr.'s usually treat without testing for most ailments. That is not my opinion, I come from a family of nurses.
