Deer meat!

We watch the neighbors property for her as she lives in another state. She told us we can let people hunt or not. We let one guy hunt every year. He has hunted here since I first moved in 25 years ago. Our landlord let him. Anyway, we still let him go & he rewards us with some meat. Last year he didn't get any. This year he got 2 deer. Today he brought me 2 bags of dear meat! YUMMY!! I am going to use the roasts & can some stew. There are some steaks & some burger. We have a beef in the freezer & tomorrow a pig is going to the butcher. We have chickens & a couple of turkeys & a bunch of canned rabbit. Life is good!

We fill our freezer with deer meat every year.

Between my son and I, each of us can get 1 male deer and at least 2 female deer (provided we get our license request in early). We usually don't get a total of 6 deer, but usually get at least 3 or 4.

You could get a whole deer by either hunting yourself or you could pay for a license for your hunter and he gives you the deer he shoots. The meat won't be as cheap if you pay to have it processed by a butcher, but you would get healthy meat.

If the hunter doesn't want to do that, and you don't want to hunt yourself, find another person that will. You don't say how big the property is beside you, but it probably is big enough to handle two hunters.

Many hungers aren't really in it for the meat, they are more interested in the challenge.

This hunter is in it for the meat. He always shares when he gets any. He went on an elk hunt in Colordao earlier this year, but didn't get any. He was hoping to bring me some elk steaks. He has given me some wild salmon he canned when he went salmon fishing. YUMMY!

There is about 130 acres across the road from me that he hunts on. I have thought of hunting, but have never had too. We prefer beef, pork, & the chickens we raise, but the deer meat is a nice change. I have helped butcher deer before as most of my brothers hunt. I may just ask him to teach me some hunting tips sometime. I know I would enjoy it.

Out here we only get a tag for a fork antlered deer. But, even though we only get one deer per hunter per year, it is still a lot of meat. We can get a land owners tag, but last season, a whopping 5 days for us, the flood messed up the hunting. If the deer are doing well this season we will be getting at least one tag. It is hard though since we both enjoy hunting! Glad you have such a good relationship with a good hunter!
A fork antlered buck is the smallest deer we can harvest. It sounded like NM is really chinchy with our deer when I read this post. We have some really big mule deer out here!

Wendy, it sounds like you are sitting pretty in the meat department! It is a blessing to have such a selection of meat, it sure makes cooking easier. we too have a nice variety, and you know you are over-blessed when you have trouble choosing which meat to have for meals.

We have our share of problems, but having enough meat is not one of them.

Glad for you. Such a tough "problem", hey?

We can send you some deer-we have more than enough! They will go into the hayloft of the barn to help themselves and it is really hard to spook them.

So many people will not eat it. A friend of ours gave us some deer meat. He said if he makes chili with the burger, his wife will go through the trash to find the wrapper to see what kind of meat he used. If it's deer, she won't eat it.

My sister's kids said they wouldn't eat rabbit. Hmm, I never told them the pot pie I made for them one time was rabbit. They still think it was chicken!

My kids will eat whatever I put on the table. One of their favorites is cow tongue. Another hated meat by some. I also have squirrels in the freezer from our friend. He loves to hunt, but his wife won't eat them or make them.

We don't hunt, but someone gifted us with some ground venison. I made chili out of it the other day. My family thought that it was the best chili that I'd ever made! Now I am going to have to find a regular supply for canning.

Back when my sister was in college, she had a friend over for dinner once. Friend was complimenting Mom on the chicken, best she ever tasted. Mom laughed and told her it was rabbit, and was surprised that the girl refused to eat another bite. Hard to figure how people think.

We let a couple come over to hunt this morning. They got here about the time I left to take my daughter to Early Morning Seminary, and bagged a doe about the time we got home. They sure were pleased about it.

My brother had a few people over for his boy's birthday. He made burgers on the grill which were a mix of deer & unseasoned sausage. The grandma went on & on about how good the burgers were. She found out what it was & would not eat another bite. Same with ice cream. Ate a huge bowl of it. Had a bite left & found out it was goat milk ice cream. She dumped teh rest out.

How can something taste wonderful & then suddenly when a person finds out what it is, it's horrible?
