new lawn mower

I have a small yard, and have had a gas engine push mower for 13 years. I love how little and easy it was for me to control. Well, the pull rope on it finally broke and decided to get a new mower, as I can't fix this one by myself.

Everyone said get a self propelled...I hate it. It is big and clunky and pulls me around. Can't back up with it(is there a secret to this), and can't get close to things easily. It doesn' have speed control, and I would like to go slower that it is set...I feel like I am fighting it. I hope I get used to it...sigh

To back up, tilt the front drive wheels off the ground. For speed control adjust the throttle lower.

Toro Personal Pace... Or, Lawn Boy may still have an aluminum deck push mower. They are lightweight and easy to control.

I agree to them being to much. DS does yard work and he does not buy self propelled mowers. Too heavy, too fast and too clumsy for small areas and that first mow when the grass is tall....James

I will

have to get the book out and take the thing apart to find the throttle, I guess. What happened to the speed control ones that were right on the handle.

I can't justify buying another mower after spending $300 on this one..

My yard is small and gorgeous flower beds all over the place, can't get around things too well. Will try lifting the front wheels today, maybe I will like it better.. thanks...

I have a self propelled. I have to hold on to a bar to make it self propelled. When I want to back up I simply let go of the bar. Our yard is not even and i couldn't mow it without the assist.

IF I was still mowing with those types of mowers I would never go without self propelled ones. They have been around for so many years now can't remember when the first ones did come out but I am sure it was in the early 50's.

Do you still have the old mower? A small engine repair shop would probably charge in the neighborhood of $40 to replace it. But maybe that was just the aggravation of yet another breakdown that pushed you over the edge. That is pretty understandable.

I will never buy a new mower again, because I have a friend that makes a living off of repairing mowers that folks have given up on. I am not suggesting that you just hastily abandoned yours, but some of the things he does to get a mower operational again are ridiculously simple repairs. The other reason I won't buy new again is because my place is still very rough sledding for a mower. It is going to take me a few seasons to get every thing peachy for a mower.

It seemed

to go better when I finished yesterday. I am just getting over being very sick(bronchitis), so may be feeling weaker yet. It helped that someone said to lift the front wheels up when turning or backing. I do regret not getting another smaller one, but I will get used to it. I think the size is the worst part...Oh well, should have researched better. thanks for answers.

I got an electric mover years ago and I love it. I use it in smaller spaces where my ride on doesn't fit. It's light weight, quiet and efficient.
