DH had his hip replaced today

Just got back from the hospital, DH had his left hip replaced today. He's only 52, but has severe osteoarthritis. The doc said that the surgey went very well. He had absolutely NO cartilage in his hip, and that the bone was worn down and was actually square! Any prayers out there would be greatly appreciated.

I work in an Ortho unit. Day 2 after surgery is usually the worst after that it gets better quickly. Hopefully they have him in physical therapy. Make sure he takes his meds before the pain gets bad (it's easier to stay ahead of it then to try to catch it if it gets too bad). Ice therapy is great to reduce swelling and pain. Hope this helps.

Hope for a quick recovery!

Sarah, RN

Oddly enough GFB had a hip replacement at age 52. As an infant he had no head on his femur so they operated to put the bone right against the pelvis and it had worn a groove- could only move fowrad and back and was shirter than his other leg. After the hip replacement it was LONGER than his other leg! He had one day of physical therapy. Therapist told he was well motivated but to slow down before he tripped. Apparently from what he said, motivation is what mostly causes success or failure. GFB also said, that if he knew how much better he was going to feel after the surgery he would've had it years before. Hoping all goes well!!

Glad to hear it was a success. Our son just had the ligament replaced in his hip. It was no picnic at first, but he's on the mend now. I'm so grateful that this can even be done! Think how it was in the 1800s. You'd just be in pain and out of luck.

Best wishes for a good recovery. My DH has a "bionic" hip also. It was real interesting at first because he couldn't bear weight on it for awhile, but after the therapy and healing time it has made a new man out of him.

Thank you for all of your prayers and good wishes. He is doing quite a bit better. He is doing well with his walker, but gets tired easily and that frustrates him. He is going to therapy 3 x a week and is very motivated to get better, but is a bit grumpy at times. Course, if it was me, I'd probably be grumpy all the time. Lol. Just thought yall might want an update.

He's tired because of how much blood he lost in surgery. Have him take iron pills (and then stool softners). That will help pick him up.

Glad he is doing well.
