Internet Gadget?

A friend was telling me that there is something you buy at ?? Radio shack for $35, and plug into the wall, and you get free internet for life. And/or for a one-time payment of $35 you get internet for life.

Her husband chops and delivers wood and odd handyman jobs, and apparently one of their customers had this set-up.

I asked her if she was sure it wasnt Magic Jack and she said no it was internet.

Is there such a thing? And if there is, where do you get it.

Tia

Even if there was such a thing TPTB would soon find a way to beat it. Remember the huge satellite dishes that gave you free TV?

Hm haven't heard of that device. Some quick browsing at the Radio Shack site would probably reveal it if it exists. I'm guessing she is thinking of something else. Because the only real way that thing could access the Internet would be via wireless or possibly via communication over the power lines though that is highly unlikely.

In some areas you can get sort of free Internet via wireless if you can find an open/unsecured connection that the other party doesn't mind you using for light duty stuff, but usually you'd only find that in a dense residential or commercial area.

I wouldn't necessarily put it past a company to come up with a 'free' internet solution but that makes you view their ads as you browse, that might be a possibility.

Or hey who knows, maybe our chief of staff is offering something like this, along the lines of the 'free' cell phones.

I personally dont think such a thing exists, she swears it does. I told her I would ask and see if anyone has heard of it. I will check out Radio-Shack. I hadnt thought of someone swiping bandwidth. It wouldnt surprise me in the least if thats what it is.

Thanks.

Hm, see if she can get a better product description / brand name, then we can see what the Shack has to offer.

Will do! I asked her if she was sure it plugged into the wall and not the tv, and she said yes.
Someones pulling her leg. There is nothing you plug into the wall and get internet, let alone for a one time payment of $35.

Right on. Though I wonder what device she is thinking of. No doubt the Shack must have some sort of plug in device that claims to give you free something and costs around $35. Ok my guess might be the 'Belkin® N150 Wireless-N Router', that is about $35. I usually use mobile broadband, and when I use it at my parent's house to let them video chat with relatives they are completely mystified as to how it works.

Broadband over powerline (BPL) was a dream and plan at one time, but it's pretty much a dead thing as I understand it now..

Ya I bet that is but if you are not in an area that Netzero has numbers set up you are Out Of Luck. You must be in their call numbers and they MUST be Local Access Call numbers at that, or they are Long Distance Calls, so it is very limited areas unless you live in big metropolitan area and cities.~! Or you will get a message like this:
No Access Numbers Found Based on the phone number provided, we do not have any local access numbers in your area.

And 10 Hours a month WOW I do more then that in one day LOL

And I just checked my area and that is what I got. LOL

Yea, and its EXTREMELY slow even for dialup (used it way back in the day) and you have to use their software(ads). they even now are starting to build a 4g aircard network with free internet BUT it is limited to 200mb/mth for free i think I use 200 mb's just logging into my email....lol
