Met my new neighbor

Just bought my farm and it became official yesterday. I had a question for the neighbor about the septic systems and sewer connection. I had never met him before and then I noticed his garage door was open, where it hadn't been when I showed up. As I approached I noticed an older guy coming out of the garage leaning on a cane and waving his hand saying "I didn't do it" (our house has been sitting empty for a few years and is kind of a disaster). After talking to him for a few minutes I asked him if he had lived there for a while. He smiled out of the side of his mouth and kind of chuckled and said "since fourty nine". I was born in 1970. Really nice guy, and obviously funny. Hope he's around for another 64 years.

Lucky you to have a friendly new neighbor. Take advantage of him and get him to tell you the history of the place/area. Those old timers(crap thats what I am now!) can have a lot of useful information. I didn't mean to actually take advantage of him,lol treat him like gold and take advantage of his years of knowledge!

Even though he had a hearing aid he was still hard of hearing, hope to be able to yell a conversation or 10 at him.

Hey neighbor! I'm in Flo town, what area of NoCo are you in?
Congratulations!
Are you going to rehab the barn, too?

Clue - he's probably a lip reader. Save your lungs and focus on him seeing you when you speak. My FIL was completely deaf in his older years but he was dead on keen with reading lips. You've probably got a treasure in the information he can share with you.

I second the lip reading. I did allot of that, too. Even after my surgery I still find myself doing it to verify what I'm hearing.

Glad you met him and he's nice. First impressions are very important. He's going to go to the post office, the store, the bank, etc., and people will ask "have you met your new neighbor?" and he can tell them "Yes, and I like them." And that's going to help a lot in the community.

Congratulations on buying the place.

We are in Spanish Lake, bought a 3.3 acres farm right behind Larimore park in the county tax sale. Everything on the property needs some rehab. Probably see you at the Ferguson market sometime, if we haven't already met. We also currently live in Spanish lake, have for 4 years.

As for the lipreading, will give it a try, I have been accused of being a mumbler numerous times, don't have a very loud voice anyway.

I only currently live a mile away and have for the last 4 years, there is one restaurant and I got a great mechanic. I bet though he was one of the first people in the neighborhood, most houses around here weren't built until the late 50s, was all farm land before that.
