Price of turkeys at thanksgiving?
So what do you think would be a good price on turkeys this year? I have set aside a little in the grochery budget to stock up a bit and freeze or can the extra meat.
You all had such good info about the sugar I would love to hear your thoughts on frozen turkeys.
Thanks!

Kroger had 14 to 20 pound frozen turkeys for $1.17 per pound two weeks ago.

Last year it was 99 cents a pound. This years meat sale (Oct. 18) it was 1.79 per pound.
Expecting 1.29 by thanksgiving, but already earned the $25 cash back from our purchases, so technically, will be getting $25 of turkey etc. extra.

One of our local markets has them on sale for .59 this week. The cheapest I saw them last year was .49 so I'm hoping they'll do as well this year.

I know that turkeys are frequently loss leaders at the stores, but I haven't bought one there in years. There's a local farm that sells fresh pastured birds, and the difference in the flavor is so remarkable that I'll pay pretty much whatever they ask.
Quite a few years ago I began to think I didn't like turkey anymore, even though I loved it as a kid. Then I had one of these fresh pastured birds, and the rush of nostalgia was amazing. Yes, it tasted like I remembered as a child.
If something happened to that local farm and I couldn't raise my own, I'd probably serve a Thanksgiving pork roast. The grocery ones are awful in comparison.

I raise a few of my own (property too small for much more, we also have raised hens), but having 4 men in the house, nd a tiny pocketbook makes it necessary to get all I can. We always have a homegrown or wild turkey on thanksgiving, but I am thankful to get the deals on the store turkeys to feed my family all year.

yeah, same deal here. I'd love to cook a home grown bird every month all year but I just don't have that many turks. We did 3 for the season, gave one to a neighbor-- DH wants to sell one but I'm not happy enough with the pinfeather removal for that so we have 2 monsters in the chest freeze, and I intend to pick up a loss leader bird every trip to the store while the sales last--- I gotta cook something every night and it can't all be prime rib, pasture turkey and pork tenderloin.

Wow that is cheap!! You cannot raise a turkey for that price! I raise my own, I raised a few extra this year for Christmas, I advertised and had the last 10 sold in about a half hour for $4.50/lb!

I am in the same boat, I prefer the homeraised. Since we have moved we are not allowed to have livestock other than the horses ....Beyond that my checkbook is squeaking so I need to purchase the meat at a loss leader price. Maybe next year I can figure out a way to do some for ourselves again.

Here they were on sale last week for $.98 per pound. I also have noticed that our local store has had "holiday baking sales" on sugar, oil, salt, and baking chips for the last several weeks. Weird, since these sales don't typically start until AFTER Thanksgiving around here.

Are turkeys typically on sale for cheaper AFTER Thanksgiving and/or Christmas? I have only recently started taking notice of things, so I'm clueless.

I bought one for .88 a lb. yesterday.
As for their being on sale after the holidays, I'm thinking they should, but truly I haven't noticed. I did see hams on sale last year.

This week they are on sale for .59 a pound so I hope they will be down to .49 by Thanksgiving. They were last year. If I can find one for .49 or lower, I'm going to get one and take it to the processors to get it smoked. I took one last year and it just about the best thing I've ever eaten.

Check your local sales circulars. Around here, the week of and the week before have the best prices. Stores use them as loss-leaders. They sell the turkey cheaper than it cost them, taking a loss on it in the hopes people will buy the rest of their holiday food there.
