How to store popcorn?

I saw a 50 pound sack of popcorn for a low price, was wondering the best way to store it?

Although 50 lbs is a lot this way, I vacuum seal it in mason jars and it has not lost it's pop in 5 or more years.

Popcorn

I don't have that much. Store mine in glass jars.

I have half-gallon jars but it would take a lot of them.

I store mine in big plastic jars with screw on lids. Each jar is about half a gallon.

If it does stop popping nicely, I add about a tsp of water to the jar, shake it around and then let is sit overnight.

I keep mine in the freezer and it helps the popping! I buy it in 5 lb bags - not 50 lbs.....

I store mine in buckets, and just put a large mason jar in the kitchen. I love the 50lbs that sam's carries.

I do recommend freezing it for a day or two before storing it... it does tend to get bug-y.

I do like Kmac... buckets and a half gallon mason jar.

Icing buckets. I can get them free from the local grocery store (Giant Eagle), I always buy it in 50# sacks. I use the large coffee "cans" in the kitchen cupboard to store some so we aren't running to the basement constantly.

Seal it up in glass jars or buckets. That's about it. If you want to keep it for many years then vacuum seal it or use oxygen absorbers, but that would be for like five years or longer storage.

Popcorn is about as durable as a grain gets. If it doesn't pop well it may be too dry. To a quart of kernels add a scant teaspoon of water, seal it up, shake well then set off to the side for an hour or so then try it again. Should pop better then.

Thanks for the thread Melissa. I, too, saw a good price on 50# and skipped it over to get the smaller bag. I'm heading back to get the large one.

Thanks again everyone!

I like the 50lb bags too and keep it in buckets. It even makes good cornbread!

That should entertain the kids!!!

I buy large bags of popcorn and put it in old gallon jars with screw tops. I also store it in large tins, the kind that hold maybe 3 gallons that come with popcorn in them at Christmas.

I just keep it in airtight 5 gallon buckets, Melissa. I've stored it for years this way, and it has never made any difference in the pop-ability or the taste, IMHO.

We eat a LOT of popcorn (cheap, good for you, and easily stored).
