Senior Pictures

I'm a grandma now, so I'm out of date with this. We are in a rural area, fairly prosperous tho, good farmland, and good jobs in the area.

Our weekly paper came out with senior photos of the five area schools graduation classes.

Smallest school has 54 photos, larger around 100. Three schools have very varied photos, kids with horses, cars, sport uniforms, all types of dresses, facial hair, and backgrounds, different size heads, etc. Two schools have photos with the the same backgrounds. One school has photos that are very uniform, no frills, almost like school pictures. Everyone looks clean and neat. At the other school, evidently the photographer furnished a black v neck formal type top for the girls and the boys are in a black suit, white shirt and black tie. I realize these are props. Some of the girls seem to have kind of stringy hair, but it might have been hot or a bad hair day.

I have no idea what senior pictures cost anymore, I bet they are not cheap tho.

So, what do your kids do? Do you like the standardized photos? I thought they looked very nice myself. I can see wanting to be pictured with a beloved horse or dog or car too. I thought several boys looked a bit too scummy, and a couple girls overdid the vamp. Just my opinion.

My daughter was quite rebellious at that age and had a hairdo that stuck out all over, and lots of mascara, and a witch look. She'd rather her kids don't see those photos now.

Our DD was not impressed by the work being done by the local photogs that her classmates were going to. Charging 200-300 or more....which, I think is just the sitting/session fee. Prints to be additional, of course. O.O

The school did the ones where the girls are in the v-neck and boys in the suit......they werent the greatest. And she didn't have any ideas where she would want momma to take her out with a camera and try to do some of the "professional" style outdoorsy pics.

Luckily, the band did a formal shoot, where they were in concert attire. The pics were pretty good, but didnt think we'd get them back in time to mail out announcements. Got the prints about a month before graduation, so we used those.

Even our 11 yr old son brought home a packet of pictures (the 2nd ones for this year) with different backgrounds, poses, etc. It was all very fancy and quite pricey- $30 for an 8x10. I noticed he left his tattered jacket on.....

Most of the kids around here just do casual senior pictures now. They usually have some done showing their hobbys (swimming, hunting, ball, etc.) My favorite photographer gets around 300 for the session fee and then you buy the pictures. My son is already planning his senior pictures to be taken at our fire station with the fire truck. He has been a volunteer fireman for the last 2 years.

I know back when I had senior pictures done (some 25 plus years ago), the photographer took several different poses and you bought the ones you liked. You then had to decide which picture was best to put in the yearbook / paper.

Back then, it was mostly the same picture - you either standing by a tree, on a chair - whatever. Most guys either wore a suit or a dress shirt. Most girls wore dressier clothes.

Nowadays, they get pictures taken with just about anything - their vehicles, their animals, etc. The boys wear tank tops (to show off their muscles) and the girls wear skimpy shirts (to show off their ___________).

Makes me wonder what kids will be wearing in another 25 years.

My youngest is going to be a senior this (coming) year and he has already recieved several pamphlets in the mail
from photographers hoping to sell him senior pics for next year.

I kind of wonder where they got his address. Does the school sell that info?
How else would they get it?

More junk mail, and waaay too early to get next years photos done.
In my opinion.

I think it's just another scam, personally. We took gd's photo in front of her car with her compound bow she used for 4H shooting sports. The kids were allowed to submit their own photos. Made as many copies as she needed on the computer and printed them out. Did buy the announcement package, tho. Since she was mostly home/correspondence schooled, and just took vocational classes at the high school for two years, the principal wouldn't let her participate in the graduation ceremony, so she didn't even attend. Had a friend in the same circumstance the year before and he WAS allowed to walk in the procession and was given his diploma from the homeschool. Times change, and I guess we have to adapt.
