Mailing to Canada Question

I need to mail a gift card to Canada. It's going in a regular letter size envelope, first class. Do I still need to do customs form?

Karen if the envelope is less then 3/4" thick and uniform in thickness then no form is required but there is a small one that can be applied right to the envelope that is just a bit bigger then a dc # label if the value is something you are more worried about and want to declare the amount of the card on

Karen - I mail the HT calendars each year just by putting the postage on them. No forms at all. You know the size of them.

Thank you so much! I wasn't sure since the postal service says a regular size envelope is to be 'documents only'.

Well I would, but you'd have to know the post offices around here. LOL! They won't pick up the phone because the post office is no bigger than my kitchen and manned by only 1 person. They also close for an hour for lunch.

I can't speak for the USPS but I imagine they have much the same rules as in in Canada. Letter mail can be up to the weight of 30 grams and a thickness not greater than 5mm with a $500 limit for document value. Gifts (letter and parcel mail) are "technically" $60 without duties applied but there must be a card stating that this is a gift. I have mailed birthday and Christmas cards to the US with the gift card taped inside the birthday/Christmas card and never thought twice about it. The only thing is that there is no way to trace ordinary letter mail so if it is lost you have no recourse. Except to make sure the gift card can be cancelled.

Thats my kinda post office! Bet they get your mail to you even if someone spells your name wrong or puts the wrong numbers on your address too.

Ha! not my kind of post office. They know everyone's business. How do I know? - worked in one and although it was staffed by a rotating crew it was mind boggling what they all knew about their neighbours. And they could not understand why I did not want to listen to their gossip. Dah. Because I lived there too and knew that they snooped into my business and gossiped about it too. Did not want them telling my neighbours that I said such and such when I hadn't. MYOB works better with a larger office when you can't know everyone.
