Listening to the mourning doves

It's been a few years since we've had the mourning doves close by. I've really enjoyed listening to their calls the past few weeks. Last month we watched as the babies used our windowsills to practice their early flying. They're such a pretty sounding bird.

I love these too. They lived in the pine trees next to our house when I was growing up, and they always make me think of home. They mate for life, and it used to break my heart when one would get hit on the road, and the other would sit by the roadside for days, waiting for their beloved to get up and fly away with them.

After many years we have some here on our place. It's such a sweet sound.

We are very blessed here to have mourning doves, white wing doves, ring neck doves, and Inca doves. It's a dove festival every morning!

We've talked about how we haven't heard mourning doves for years, then, a few weeks ago, I heard one...now I hear them daily.

Now if I could just hear a whippoorwill...
