Underwood Deviled Ham.
What in blue blazes happened to that stuff! I had not bought or eaten that for probably 40 years and I spotted it at the store and brought it home. GAG!
We ate lots of sandwiches back then using it and it made a good lunch with pickles and lettuce.
I just opened the can and it has the consistency of a cheap dog food and, to be honest, it smelled a little like dog food. I took a dab on a knife and tried it and spit it out. I wonder if the outside cats will eat it!
I find it rather sad that products that were good once are not that way any more.

The manufacturer found "other" animal parts to make it out of.
Happy eating...

Blame the cost accountants. Each business goes for cheaper and cheaper hoping consumers can't taste or see the difference. Did you ever wonder why there was an occupation named food chemist? Think about that combination. Food and chemist. That's an appetite killer right there. I'm sure they do a needed job. Some though, are figuring out ways to fool the buyers of fake food.
Schlitz beer is the classic case study about cost cutting ruining a great product that at one time was the number two beer in this country. The cheaper recipe was adopted to squeeze out a few more bucks of profit. Instead they slaughtered a golden goose to get the eggs.

It also could be because you have not eaten it in so long. Sometimes the things we grow up with taste good to us, then we stop eating it because we moved out of our parent's home or for whatever reason. Our tastes changes through the years. So it might not be the deviled ham.

Do they still sell it wrapped in that white paper? As a child in the 50s mom used several cans and mixed it with chopped boiled eggs and chopped sweet pickles to make her famous sandwich spread. She'd use a loaf of Kern's white sandwich bread and make each of us our special sandwich. This was usually a weekend only treat and would give us kids one small glass bottle of Coke to share as we ate our sandwich. Leftovers were kept refrigerated and ready for anyone to enjoy later. Mom really liked the sandwich spread and none of us told her how much we hated it. She also liked pickled pigs feet and pickled bologna and never had to worry about any of us bothering those either.

I agree Sonshine. Our tastes certainly do change as we become older or exposed to a different way of doing things.

I liked both Spam and Vienna Sausages as a kid -- can't stand them as an adult.
Our tastes change as we age.

It's probably been about forty years since last I ate any myself because that's exactly what it reminded of back then. Hasn't changed much apparently.
Some brands of Vienna sausages were palatable upon a time until every single one of them start putting chicken in. Used to be all pork/beef. Can't find a one now.

Child of the 50's here too! My Mom made sandwiches for a family of 4 from a single can, and didn't add in a bunch of pickles or eggs either. Just mayo spread thin on one piece of bread, and deviled ham on the other. And passed it off as a delicacy, to be savored. No, we certainly weren't poor, but she was incredibly frugal. I just might have to go buy a can for old times' sake!

We considered ourselves blessed if we got deviled ham. We usually got potted meat.

Never cared for Deviled Ham.Rather have potted meat, but it must be cold or I didn't like it.I mean cold enough to break the cracker or "nab" when you drug it through it.
I like canned corned beef to make sandwiches. Now it does look like dog food, and it might be,but its good.
I used to love "Campbell s Chicken Noodle Soup".Not anymore since they changed their recipe.
"Philips Beans n Franks"still love them and don"t be trying to slip "Beanie Weenies" past me, I can't stand them.
I used to love "GIBBS Pork n Beans"with the little piece of pork inside.Haven't seen those in years.
Hot dog Wieners, its next to impossible to fine any with out that "artificial smoke" flavor.Don't like those.

i supposed it's possible that our tastes have changed. i thought the product had changed. it tastes so much different. i wont touch it now . same way with the vienna sausages. we use to eat quite a bit of bologna growing up also but it had to be maple leaf. i can't eat that now either. i do still eat the hereford corned beef. still tastes the same to me. i dont think they ever changed that except the price. i remember when it was 50 cents a can. lucky if you can get it for 3 now. ~Georgia.

Now, after all that, I am going to have to see if I can find it in the store and buy a can.

Mom used that to make sandwich spread too. I actually liked the taste of that better than the ham. The potted meat had a milder taste. I still make an egg salad sandwich spread but I never put meat in it. That's entirely gross.

boy..did I LOVE Underwood deviled ham when I was little! even as a young newly wed. then as you, years went by. so..I also bought some..thinking..YUM. also hated it. I think my taste just changed. now I just wait until I bake a big ham, then whip out the food processer and make my own totally amazing ham salad (deviled ham). I'm sure they've made it cheaper now, too. what hasn't been made cheaper? ugh!
