Floridians- Festivals

Some festivals coming up soon- Need to double check dates of Kumquat Festival in Polk County. I believe it's in January.
Swamp Cabbage festival in LaBelle, FL - last weekend in Feb.
Strawberry Festival in Plant City March 1-11.
Edited to add - My mistake. Pasco County- Dade City- is the site of the Kumquat Festival. Jan 28.
My recipe for Kumquat Pie- 2 cans sweetend condensed milk, 2/3 cup Kumquat Juice, 2 tablespoons chopped kumquat peel. Mix well and turn into deep dish crumb crust. Chill till set.

Used to go to the Seafood festival in Feb. in Grant. Worked at the first couple. Has gotten quite large but the food is great.

Swamp Cabbage is the heart of the cabbage palm. Known as hearts of palm in the gourmet aisle. They can be served raw in salad or fried. QWERTY tried to go to the Grant Seafood Festival about 5 years ago and the traffic was outrageous- a backup we sat in for 2 hours trying just to get to the parking area before we called it quits! Grandfatherbear doesn't remeber they paid for the seafood when he was a child, but I told him I was quite sure they weren't giving it away!

Grandmotherbear, do you plan to go to any of the ones in the south, like the swamp cabbage festival or strawberry festival? I guess that one isn't really south. I went to the strawberry festival last year (work related) and was sent home with so many strawberries and onions it was insane! Onions as big as my head! No lie! And the strawberries! They were everywhere!

I once went to a "Gator Festival", but don't remember the town. Danced with Al E. Gator... a guy (I guess!?) in a gator costume with "Al" written on his shirt! Ate lots of gator that weekend!

grandmotherbear, yes I'm sure that it wasn't free 5 years ago because I was there in the late 60's don't remember the year but before 1970. It was small and just getting started really nice but caught on really qwick and today I would say that it went viral. Have family there that I haven't seen since 1991 when I left.It just got too big for me.
