The way that plastic at the bottom broke off, there almost certainly was an open gap between the glass and metal shield below. I'm putting this in Darwin Award contestant category.

I would have hired a crash test dummy to stand in for me. I wouldn't have been on the other end of the gun with a live person behind the glass either.
