Dishwasher

I have saved up my pennies & have about $300 to buy a new dishwasher. I might could go up to $350. I know that's pretty cheap but I don't want bells & whistles--just a good basic model. Anybody have any recommendations?

Yup, Whirlpool. Do NOT buy a Frigidaire!

I have a Kitchenaid and I love it. I think it's outside your price range, not sure but I think it was closer to $500.

I wish I remembered which brand my mother has, I hate the one she has. It's got the water post things that come up in the middle of the racks so nothing big fits well. It also doesn't hold the silverware individually so spoons and such will nest together if you aren't really careful.

Ugh, so far so good with our whirlpool other appliances.
Our dishwasher (GE) sounds like it's on death's door (strangely like Chromartie from the Sarah Connor Chronicles, lol) Anyhow
Good luck, Might try calling around a few stores to see if they have any on scratch and dent sales.

Dh designs dishwashers - he's WP's Mr Dishwasher....but I couldn't tell you a price on a single model. I test machines for them - and did 20 years of testing for Maytag. I don't get to select what I test- they just bring me a machine from time to time. Some aren't production models but rather a frankenstein of mixed parts they are testing. I only found a couple DW that I couldn't stand. One was a fridigdaire the other a Fischer/ Pykel. I honestly think the washability has more to do with how you load it, your water temperature and how well you clean it out. Rarely did I test a machine that didn't work. Usually any problem I ran into was operator error.

I refuse to wash my dishes before I wash my dishes. I scrape the big stuff off and put them in. If you are willing to wash before you wash - almost any DW will get your dishes clean. I just don't see the sense in that. In the bottom of the DW is a screen that collects junk from the wash cycle. From time to time DH will remove that and clean the screens on it. Many people neglect doing that.

To the original poster: I could have written your same post about 6 months ago. We purchased one from Sears well within that price range. It doesn't have the whistles and bells, but it gets the dishes clean. That's all I wanted.

I've also heard that the German Bosch is the best, but very pricey. Make sure you get one that has the type of water holes where a little water squirts out really fast- like putting your thumb over the hose and making it shoot out real fast. THis is more important than lots of water. I had a Maytag twelve years ago that did this and it did a better job than more expensive models.

We have a Bosch in the new house and it's terrible. Stinks to high heaven, doesn't dry, blows around everything in the top rack, etc, etc, etc. Lots of other people report problems with them; apparently, quality has gone down. And, they are tempermental. Glad I didn't pay the upfront price for it.

As soon as HomeDepot offers a 0% finance on appliances deal, I will be buying a new dishwasher. I got a cheap something or another for the old house and had zero problems with it. Once I figure out what it was, I'll buy another one for the new house.

My home came with a GE in 1986 and we put a new GE in when we remodeled the kitchen. The old one still worked just fine, but we just wanted to match the color of the other appliances. Ours is a step above the basic model (it has a start delay) and it was real affordable.

Does it take salt (not sure what the American = is. We called it strusselsalz, looked like rock salt)? I know ours did and if you didn't refill it often it would smell as it traps water in there with it.

$350 will buy you a pretty nice dishwasher. Dishwasher's are cheap.

So far as names, we have a Whirlpool also (Sears, IIRC) that we got as a wedding present, 15 years ago.

That is a good question. We didn't receive the owner's manual, so I guess I need to read one online. If some kind of salt solves the stink problem, I can live with the rest.

Thanks for the info!

No problemo. There should be an opening (kind of like a jet dry opening) on the bottom. It should unscrew, you'll see some funky water and a hole. Might have to buy the special salt at homedepot/lowes here.

This is what you're looking for http://www.amazon.com/Miele-Somat-Sp...0426264&sr=8-1 A full hole will last about 3ish months. When it was completely empty took about 1.5 of the small boxes to fill it up.

It normally takes me about ten minutes to do our dishes... and that includes cleaning the stove, countertops and putting everything away....

This looks like the dishwasher we have at the other house. As I said, I really like it. No problems.
