Atlanta hotel recommendations?
We're going to Atlanta next month to catch a Braves game. We plan to hit a restaurant in Marietta and the Coke museum. Any recommendations on hotels near any of those places? Any neighborhoods to stay out of? Looking for decent and safe, maybe with suites? Would prefer to stay under $100 a night if possible, but will not sacrifice safety for money. Thanks for any recommendations!

My husband opened the Atlanta Marriott Marquis in downtown Atlanta but hasn't been at that property in 13 years so I'm not in the "hotel loop" any longer. Have you googled hotels/motels in that area? When we had to go out of town back in the spring for a family matter that's what I did and found a fantastic new hotel that had only been open a year, had rave reviews and it was only $71.99/night with a full complimentary breakfast. Good luck!

You can try travelzoo and quikbook, both are good for finding low rates. Enter the address of where you are going and it gives you hotels by distance from there. Hope it's not Labor Day weekend. There are so many things that weekend I don't know if you'll find a hotel now.
Wow fw, it must have been something opening it! I've been to Dragoncon a few times and that's a magnificent hotel!

I guess I kinda mixed up the question.
My most important criteria is to be in a safe area. If it happens to be near one of the places we are visiting, that's a plus, and if it can be had for under $100/night, that's even better, but I'm not familiar enough with Atlanta to know what areas to stay away from.
So....can you guys direct me on areas to either stay in, or NOT stay in? I know where to find deals on rooms, but I've used them before and ended up in some really unsavory areas.

I wouldn't stay near Turner Field. It's easy to get there using MARTA+shuttles. The Residence Inn downtown gets pretty good reviews and has suites. There's an Embassy Suites over by Olympic Park but I haven't seen it. I too go to Dragon*Con and so I'm very familiar with the Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, Westin, and Sheraton downtown - all quite nice but expensive. There are some other hotels in that area that I'm not familiar with - the Ritz is obviously quite nice, the Ellis, the Omni - all "business" hotels so I'm not sure they fit your criteria. If you don't mind staying out of downtown a bit you could look around Lenox Square Mall in Buckhead - near MARTA stations and a bit more options.
There are panhandlers on the downtown streets but I wouldn't call them dangerous. Keep in mind that World of Coke, Underground, Olympic Park, etc. are touristy areas in a big city and attract the sorts of people who will try to take advantage of that. Just be alert and you'll be fine.
The Georgia Aquarium is worth a visit if you have the time.

The closest I have stayed to Atlanta is a suburb called College Park. I stayed at the Country Inn and Suites(Atlanta Airport South) with DH when he was on business. It was very nice, clean, and I felt safe. But I think it is quite a ways South of Marietta. We went to the World of Coke on that trip and I LOVED it! Have fun!

We have stayed at Residence Inn and liked it althought it has been awhile. Last year we stayed at the Wyndham Hotel right outside the gates of six flags and it was nice/clean and around $100 a night and they had a full time security gaurd that would walk me to our vechicle if I had to go outside. It is known to be a "'bad" area but we loved it and did not see any gang activity or other "problems". We walked to six flags and back several times.

We were just there last weekend. Saw two Braves games and toured CNN. We stayed at the Durey right outside Gwinnett, it may have been IN Gwinnett. It was a great hotel only took about 20 minutes to get to Turner Field field.
You will have a blast!! Oh the hotel was about 69.00 AND you got a free HOT breakfast, eggs, sausage, waffles, biscuits and gravey and all the regular stuff. Also they have a snack set up in the evenings for free. We didnt get to use that cause we were at the game!!!
It has a Papadouse (sp) in the parking lot, great New Orlenas style restrauant. Seemed like an ok place. Nice pool and hot tub!!

Stay away from the south side of town. Whenever we go to Atlanta (I'm from there, but now go to visit family or go to a Braves game), we stay at Hotel Sierra. They cater to business people, so they are not as busy on week ends. You will get a fantastic suite for $53 including a free full breakfast. It is right off Ga 400. The rooms are large and very comfortable.
I would park at a MARTA station here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_S...(MARTA_station), take the train to 5 points I believe, then take the Braves shuttle to the gate of the stadium. My daughter and I did that last week to see Braves vs Cubs.
Have fun, and Go Braves!!

Thanks everyone, you have really helped in my search! Most of the prices you guys mentioned are much lower than I'm finding at the same hotels, maybe because we are going during the week?
I didn't realize there was an Army post in/near Atlanta, so before I make any reservations, I'm going to see if they have space available. I'm guessing they probably won't, though, so the advice you guys have offered is invaluable! I will also read up on MARTA, we took a tram/shuttle/train/idk what it was called to see the Rockies play when we were in Denver visiting my SIL, and we were hoping Atlanta would have something similar, because it was really nice not having to fight traffic after the game!

Oh, and you know, if you guys could think good thoughts for Chipper, hubby REALLY wants him to play when we are there, and he seems to be trying for as many injuries as possible this year! Hubby's never seen the Braves play, so this is a pretty special trip for us, and they're playing our other team, which makes it particularly cool

When my husband was stationed in Montgomery, Al, we would go to Atlanta whenever a team from Pittsburgh came to town. The best trip we had was when the penguins were playing and we stayed at a hotel by the Airport. They had a free shuttle to the Airport and from there we jumped on MARTA and took it anywhere we wanted to go. It was nice to not have to drive in a city we didn't know.

MARTA is cool! Only place I know someone can wear hoopskirts, full Scottish type regalia and sausage curls and never get a second look LOL Even downtown streets take another look, but not on MARTA.
My sister says avoid south and west of Atlanta. Have a good time and good thoughts for Chipper :-)
