I'm starting to think it was too much...

I'm starting to think planting 6 of these per person was a little too much...especially since DH doesn't like em...

Well, things in the garden are starting to get that raged late summer look..

The concords are starting to show some color...

I'm growing out a cucumber for seed, it has very tough skin now, like a melon.

My sunflower has decided to look down towards earth now.

And the majority of my silly chickens can't figure out how to go in and out a door. Only bernice seems to know...and it drives the other girls batty. I usually end up herding them out with a stick so they can forage around a bit.

Bernice is a bit cranky...usually.

you're so far ahead of me Nickie. times like this i wish i lived in a better climate for growing. my grapes are still small hard green balls. wish i could have chickens here in the city although i can look at the neighbors yard and they just had a new littter of rabbits. i dont see much difference. ~Georgia.

I ran across a recipe today that just might help.

Poor Man's Crab Cakes

2 cups grated zucchini (those yellow squash would work just as well)
2 eggs (tell your girls to get with the program and lay something already!)
1 1/2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning
1 cup bread crumbs
1 tablespoon mayo
1 teaspoon prepared mustard

Mix all ingredients together. Shape into cakes. Fry in small amount of oil until lightly browned.

I'll be over this weekend to help you with your squash problem. (joking, can't ride in the car that long yet)

Did you know you can dehydrate squash and make squash chips? Mom made them once but burned them

Don't feel bad. I made some for the first time this past week. Yuk. I like squash but not in chip form!

Love Bernice! What a aggravated looking chicken.

All my squash is about gone & it didn't make much anyway. Our garden is about gone entirely--just tomatoes & peppers left and they are pretty pitiful. But we did have a good harvest in spite of drought & being away from home a lot this year. Filled all my quart jars including the new 24 I bought last year & most of our pints. I'm down to having to scrub out the ones I was gifted with that look like they were in the dump.

Squash is my #1, all-time favorite vegetable. I wish I had some.

And Bernice...she looks so funny when she is cranky.

DROOLING. None of ours came up this year and we'll get maybe a few zucchini before frost. Lucky you to have too many.

Love your pics of the garden. I grew up in NE IN and my dad always had a garden with those type of squash. Miss the fresh veggies from his garden. Wish I could find a place somewhere out in the country to grow my own too. Just haven't found my place yet...LOL But someday we will.

What amazes me about summer squash is how quickly it grows from a little squash-ette to a big honkin' baseball bat if you're not careful.

I love it though. Mine croaked early thanks to bugs. My favorite way to use it up is zucchini relish. It's SO good you could even give it away as Christmas gifts.

You're an inspiration, doing so much in such a small area.

Your squash is awesome, mine died when we left on vacation.. Don't know how you feel about fried squash? that is my fav. you could just slice your squash and toss into to bags to use during the winter. I got a few bags in the freezer but my 15year old can eat a bag of fried squash at one sitting.LOL

Our summer squash is long gone but I had a bumper crop. We ate squash till one of the older girls said please no more. Then I started freezing it! I have a jar of squash chips too. Yummy! I was out there the other day getting ready for the fall stuff and guess what? I have volunteer squash coming up! I'm hoping for a few more before the cold gets here.

Your garden looks much better than mine. Our grapes will be ready for jam and jelly probably the middle of next week. Even with all the dryness we'll be getting tons!
How old are your chickens now? They look great!

I only plant one zuchinni and one summer squash at a time. Plant 3 times a year in a large 1/2 50gal barrel planter. The last one in late august, it goes into the greenhouse for winter. We love squash but fresh is best, any extra goes into zuchinni bread in the freezer. That blueberry zuchinni bread is awsome....James
