Exclamation 'Massive heat wave' on way

While much of the U.S. was cooler Thursday ahead of another heat wave, temperatures were still around triple digits in Oklahoma and Texas — where ways to beat the heat included dumping 2,400 pounds of ice into a pool with hundreds of people.

"The stage is being set for a massive heat wave to develop into next week as a large area of high pressure is anticipated to circulate hot and humid air over much of the central and eastern U.S.," the National Weather Service warned. "Maximum heat index values of at least 100°F are likely across much of this area by the middle of next week, with heat index values in excess of 110°F possible over portions of these areas."

"The big story for the coming weekend will be the building heat," added Jim Keeney, a National Weather Service meteorologist. "It looks like it's going to be a long-term heat wave."

This looks like a dangerous situation for many parts of the country.

Thank you for the heads up, Jim. I will make sure all my hoses are stretched out, ready to go to squirt any furry being that wants it.

Bear in mind that water hoses make great solar collectors. The water you're squirting might well be hot for awhile.

We've already had heat index of 115 to 120 here in Kansas. As Deacon Jim says, be carefull of that first water from a garden hose, it can almost be scalding hot if it has been laying in the sun.

In MD this is going to be unbearable...we have super high humidity to go along with the heat. I might see if DH can rig up some box fans in the overhang for the horses. The goats are in the shade, so they won't be in such bad shape.

Nice. We're moving downstate to the new place Wed/Thurs/Fri right in the middle of all that heat/humidity. Guess we had better stock up on the gatorade.

Oddly enough, it looks like FL might be a (relatively) cool spot. Our normal summer high rarely goes over 95. Of course, the LOW this morning was 85.....

Looks like it ends when you get to Mexico or Canada.

Just north of you on PA we have the same problem.
I worry about the old folks...if you have any elderly neighbors, make it a point to check on them.

Gonna pull down the rest of that round bale and bury the garden in deep mulch to keep the roots cool and moist. I am very glad my garden is in the shade this year. The only thing in sun is the tomatoes. It might actually survive. The house is going to be brutally hot though.... sigh.

I was just thinking the same thing. I'll go ahead and cook or bake everything NOW and freeze some ice for the chickens. Make sure all the laundry is caught up and turn off/unplug stuff in an effort to keep the power bill down, as I'll be using lots of A/C.

We've been having August heat since the last week of May. There's no moisture left in the ground to help moderate it.

We've already had a couple of those days where the heat index was 110 degrees. The humidity is the killer here in the south. Cooler- check....Gatorade....check....lots of ice..check, check.....
My chickens hide out in the woods. It is surprising how much cooler it is in there. Horses get sprayed down several times a day and stay in the shade. Pigs just lay in the pond, calves go for the shadest spot they can find, goats....my goats will still lay in the sun. They are nuts.

I use the hot hose water to wash the chicken's dishes every afternoon.

I'm hoping to get my berries off the vine before this heat. I don't know what else I can do at this point.

Guess my rabbit will be moving back into the house.

I'm thinking about putting a fan out at the chicken pen and I'm going to put a temporary top on the pen to give them extra shade.
