Alma has taken a turn for the worse
Alma woke up about 3:15 and needed to use the toilet. I got her out of bed and took care of that. Within a minute of being back in bed she started gasping for air. The pulse-oxymeter showed an O2 sat of 40.
As instructed to treat "air hunger", I gave her 5 mg morphine sublingual. Didn't help. Advanced help arrived. The fire department didn't spend a lot of time here, since they got her in an ambulance and out of here pretty fast. They ran her in with the siren.
I just left the hospital. They aren't sure what the problem is yet. She is intubated and on assisted breathing. They said she would be moved from the ER to the ICU soon. She is too heavily sedated to respond to me, so I came home to get some rest.
My gut feeling is that it doesn't look good at all.

I'm not taking it well this time. I can't get back to sleep. I was just sitting here looking at all of the debris on the floor from medical disposables left by rescue workers.

Sounds like flash pulmonary edema or a pleural emboli to me. Either way, you are right, it probably isn't good. Take peace in knowing that you have been there for her and you got her home. If it wasn't for you she wouldn't have had that bit of comfort and pleasure.

I really appreciate all the kind thoughts.
I'm trying to think of something I can do to help her. As it happens, I have some selected documents from her last hospital stay medical chart. Since she's in a different hospital this time I think I'll take those to the hospital to see if it helps them any.

I just saw her again. She is still in the ER heavily sedated, but her O2 sat is up to 96 now. She was 40 here, 50 when the ambulance arrived at the ER, and 90 when I saw her earlier in the ER.
The nurse remarked that it is unusual to see someone awake with an O2 sat of 50. I don't know of what significance that might be, but still interesting. I was pleased to hear that because it seems to point to the unlikelihood of brain damage from hypoxia.
They are still waiting for the results of a chest x-ray & CAT scan. No firm diagnosis yet, but they're as sure as they can be that it's not a CVA. That's significant because she was taken into hospice for CVA, so no advanced work would be done if it's a CVA.

Actually, that can make a world of difference.
May everyone have a friend as good to them, as you are to her.

It kind of sounds like a pulmonary emboli to me, or a fat emboli too. Is she on coumadin or anything? I don't think its a CVA either

She was on low dose aspirin, but they took her off of it because of the subdural hematoma. She was due to resume low dose aspirin on the first of next month (7/1).
