Composting?

My husband just put my compost 'barrel' together-It's an black plastic octagon shaped bin on a steel frame. It is easy to rotate and seems very sturdy... I am very excited..

Since my dogs 'compost' my meat left overs, my chickens "compost" all the veggie and fruit left overs and garden excess.. The main thing I want to compost it the chicken poo, pine shavings and grass clippings. I also have access to rabbit poo in pine shavings...

So, what do I need to start w/.. Anyone else use this type of composier?

Fill it up, moisten but don't get it too wet, add some soil, turn when you get around to it. Mom loves hers. In fact she wore one out and is on her third. She also has one of those compost balls that you roll around in the yard. She doesn't like it as much as the ones mounted on the frame.

Your other ingredients sound fine, but I don't remember any veggie scraps, like potato peelings.......... which they say are not good for chickens. Add a bit of dirt and to give it a kick start a touch of amonia, maybe 4 ozs to 12 oz of water, mix before adding to bin.
