I Swear I'm Not Going to Get Attached...

A story about my coffee mug. How about you... what is it that YOUR attached to?

Quote:
Sometimes you do it. You know you shouldn’t, but you do it anyways. You get attached to a thing… an inanimate object… something silly or small or that gives you comfort. It could be because you use it all the time, or that someone gave it to you, or it could just be some quirky, weird, emotional thing… regardless of all that, you’re attached to it.

Then the day comes… that attached object goes missing, gets broke, or just plain wears out. C’mon, don’t look at me like that… you know you’ve got something like it in your life. For me though… it was my mug. My mom gave me the mug. She had received it as some promotional gift somewhere at a truck show or something. She never used it. I was in need of something to carry my coffee while I traveled.

Most of the travel mugs are poorly shaped and made to just fit into a standard “cup holder” in a car. Which, you know, seems nice and all, but usually that small, can sized slot doesn’t have the height clearance for the cups. It’s really a perfect example of disharmony in the world. But I found harmony in my travel mug. It was a fat-bottomed mug (hmmm… isn’t there a “Queen” song something like that?). You know the kind, the kind that look like the space capsule from the Apollo space program? That mug served me well, for years… while traveling the country in a truck and while steering my desk at my current job.

very nice tale .
what am I attached to ?
Grandpas shaving cup.
Just an old heavy white stone ware cup likely saved from some garbage dump.
It was Grandpas and when I hold it I can see him swishing the soap into a lather and shaving that hard set square jaw like when I was little.
Hed take the blade out of the old safety razor smear lather on my face so I could shave like him. and tell me stories of sleeping in hay piles and working on farms when he was young .
Its just an old ugly cup but its priceless to me.
BTW thanks didnt realize how long it had been since I really took the time to spend with Grandpa . hes been gone more than 20 years

Thanks for sharing, really entertaining!
My favorite line:
"He was free, fat-bottomed, and stable… honestly, those are three characteristics I look for in friends, and I had just stumbled onto them with Mr. Mug."

Awww. I would bet thats DH's thing also. It's an old spice cup that he still uses the soap and brush for it. For me I can say the only thing I am attached to are my kids and dh. If I lost them I would be lost, but honestly can't think of a thing I need other then them. I have moved, gave up things, lost or had things stolen so many times in my life that they are just that...things, my family is way more then that.

-Same here, PyroDon. I have my Grandpa's old shaving mug and brush. The mug is just an old Old Spice mug with a ship on each side and the brush is an old Ever Ready brush most likely made with boar hair. But the smell of them remind me of my Grandpa. I used to use the brush after he passed away, but the bristles were starting to fall out. I bought a generic one from Wally-World but it just isn't the same. So I put them in the back of the closet in the bathroom to keep them from getting broken, but where I can still pull them out every now and then...

L8R,
Matt

I don't like being attached, but I am----to my sugar spoon! It came from my mother's wedding set of silverware. The set is long gone but the sugar spoon remains. I took it when my parents passed in December of 1974 and I still use it every day. I plan to have it with me at my funeral.

Mine is a 750lb cement "cemetary" urn. This was in teh yard of my folk's farm, and when we were little, we could climb and sit inside. My dad says it was in the yard of a house one of his older sisters bought, and she didn't want it so hauled it out to the farm and left it there (this was when my Dad was little).

It's been hauled through three states now, and sits proudly outside my front door. At least DH is "OK" with this and has not complained about me dragging it around. I took it when my folks had sold the farm and no one else was interested - didn't mean anything to anyone else I guess, but for some reason it meant a lot to me.

No, you should be able to read comments, but I haven't been posting for a while so I doubt that there are many comments to read.

Comments seem to be casualties of the age of facebook... I get comments on there for posts... LOL.

I missed this earlier. That's the kind of thing I'm talking about.

My favorite thing is a small smiley face keyring. I have it attached to my purse. The eyes are made of hearts and my DS got it from a gumball machine. When I feel stressed and that I'm not appreciated, I just look at that silly keychain and am reminded that at least DS loves me.

THis is sad but I am attached to a spiderman tshirt... I know thats sad. I have this cute littel spiderman tshrt that is long sleved and has these mesh like wing flaps under the arms. My oldest wore it when he was little, my 6 yr old wore it, my 4 yr old wore it and now my 2 year old is wearing it. We have moved many times over the years and everytime I see my 2 yr old daughter in it it makes me smile and think of all the good times when my other 3 wore it. When she outgrows it I think I am going to have it framed...lol Sad huh?

Landweller thats not sad at all! You have a shirt with family history! I still have my sons baseball shirt he wore during practice when he was a pitcher in high school. I wear it from time to time. On the front is an animated bold print hand in a peace sign that says "Everybody wants Peace"
On the back that same gesture points down. "But Nobody wants a Curve."

I have a few things that belonged to my beloved Granny. One is an old old old overstuffed chair that was recovered in the 40s I think. Has horsehair stuffing. Its been all stained over the years, my kids & grandkids...her cat used it as a scratch post & so did alot of our indoor kitties. The seat part is saggy. It reminds me of a Desoto for some reason.
The other item is a "Descoware" burnt orange enameled Dutch oven made in Belguim. Whatever was baked in it you can reheat it on the stove top it reheats quickly. Id rather part with the raggedy old Desoto. At least I have pictures of it when it was in Granny's home.
Seedspreader I know what you mean about the stuff we get used to. Simple things like coffee mugs that do their job for us for many years then they die.
Glad you found a decent replacement!

I think you'll be pretty happy with the replacement. DH has had a Cabela's mug much like that one for a v-e-r-y long time. So long that I cannot even remember when he got it. I know the kids were likely in elementary or very early jr high and they are now 19 & 21 !!

A few dings, but still going.

That is so funny. I had a friend come for a visit last Autumn. We had not seen each other for 34 years. I was 17 the last time we were together. We worked together on the coast in Oregon. I had given her a coffee mug back then. I did not even remember I had done that. We kept in casual contact over the years and then more contact the last few, so she came to visit. She told me about that mug and how it was her favorite. It fit her hands to warm them just right. It had been broken by one of her children and she and now her grown children had been searching for years to find one like it. She described it to me and it sounded sort of like one I had bought at the pottery shop at Dollywood. I got it out and showed her. It was EXACTLY right. So, she took home another coffee mug with her and she guards it fiercely.

As far as clothing, I have a pair of long underwear that were my Dad's when he was a teenager. He is now 78. They button up the front and lace up the back. They are very thick and warm and totally cotton. I wore them as a teen and my son wore them as a teen. They are still in great shape.
