Recycling aluminum cans

We always pick up cans on our road....and today, the price for cans at the recycle center was 60 cents per pound....we held on to ours when they were selling for only 29 cents a pount....we had 87 pounds of cans today. We crush ours, and some were uncrushed...but love the price today !

This reminds me of when my two kids were young. We took a bike ride every evening and picked up cans on our country roads. Taught them to be green and earned a little spending money.

Our weight loss club saves cans to help raise money every year to pay for our trip to convention. The last 2 times I've sold them they were .60.

Cans have been about .60-.65 a pound here. My daughter took our cans in a few weeks ago, and it was about $4.00 total. She was thrilled!

We stash ours in the attic of the garage until prices go up. We smash them so they don't take up so much room. It is embarassing when they open the bags, so many beer cans. But, but, we've been saving them for a year!

Been wondering if food cans would be worth anything, I guess there is some steel in them? Anybody know?

We just took in a load here yesterday. There is an old dump here on our place and my girls got out there the last month and dug out cans. Would go out there a couple times a week and dig for an hour or so. Was actually kind of fun and there were a TON of cans, although most had been burned. Local scrap yard is paying .70 a pound. We just piled them all up in a big pile and I ran over them a few times with the tractor to smash them. They ended up with over 300 lbs of can and got $238 just for the can. Also took all the power cords off of everything and picked up all copper and other aluminum we saw. Total take home was $310. Not bad at all. My girls feel rich as they got to split the money after covering my gas for taking them up there. Trying to teach them how things work. There is still at least that many cans out there if not more, but the snakes have come out so it will have to wait until next winter to hunt for more.

Most of you probably know this already...

Our local scrap buyer also pays for aluminum foil at the same rate as cans. It does not need to be separated, but is supposed to be relatively clean of food.

Of course, disposable aluminum trays and pans pay well. I scored a stack of aluminum pans at an auction recently that were too dirty and too dented to reuse. I paid $1, and they brought $4 at the scrap yard! Keep your eye out for these items being thrown away at church dinners, etc.

Some of the hair spray cans are made of aluminum too, and pay the same as cans at our scrap yard.

Just about 30 years now in MI we have had a bottle deposit. Ten cents on all soft drink, beer and now sportsdrink bottles and cans, glass and plastic.

When the law first came out, people didn't like it, because it was extra work. Stores didn't like it because they had to find places to store the empties until they went to the recycler or where ever they go.

I didn't like the fact that I had to pay that darn dime deposit.

Looking back, I think that has been one of the best moves the state has ever made to help keep our roadsides clean.

We just have to remember that the 12 pack comes with an extra $1.20 deposit attached to it.

I donate mine to the local animal shelter. They have a huge trailer. I take them down and toss them in. Money goes to a good cause
