A Vacation in NH!

I can hardly believe it, but we'll spend 2 weeks in a cottage on a lake in NH mid July. Near Piermont, NH.
It will take us a few days to get there, we'll spend July 4th w/DD in mts of N. GA. Want to see some of Pittsburg area too.
On the way back, we want to see all the historic places-that cracked 'Bell' and all-in Philly.
Have a family wedding 7/30 in Baltimore. Will stop in Evansville, IN on way back to visit DS & family.

Anyone w/suggestions on what to take in will be appreciated & welcomed!

Patty

If you are a baker, be sure and stop in at King Arthur Flour in NH.

The waterfront in Annapolis is beautiful! I've never been to it but I believe there is a big aquarium in Baltimore harbor.

To top it all off, among other great stuff, I have a cousin I have not seen fir nearly 40 yrs. He & his wife own a restaurant in the Littleton/Bethlehem area called Tim-Bur Alley. (Used to be in an inn called 'Adair Inn') Can't wait to go.
The cottages take dogs so our "Honey" can go too. Canoes provided.
WhooHooo!

We'll be sure to check out the Pittsburg museums!

Littleton is a beautiful area. Sugar Hill, NH near Franconia is one of our favorite places- If you have time look up Polly's Pancake Parlor in Sugar Hill- it's not too far from Littleton. They only serve breakfast and lunch, but make the best pancakes and waffles. I'm partial to the Oatmeal Walnut waffles.

If you like hiking, there's something for all skill levels. Lots of marked trails. And check out the Kancamagus scenic highway

It sounds like a great trip Patty. And, a nice time of year to be going. I haven't spent much time as far west as you'll be staying but I've spent a lot of time in the White Mountains. (Far west, in a state as narrow as NH, is a relative thing of course.)

One thing I would definitly recommend is a drive on the Kancamagus Highway from Lincoln to Conway. http://www.kangamangushighway.com/ It's a beautiful scenic highway. About 35 miles long.
Lincoln is less than an hour east of Piermont.

Clark's Trading Post http://www.clarkstradingpost.com/index.php , in Lincoln is a fun place to visit. They have trained black bear shows, a train ride, several small museums and a very nice gift shop, among other things.

A ride on the Cog Railway up Mount Washington is a great trip. http://thecog.com/index.php Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeast and on a good day the views from the top are amazing. The Cog Railway is quite expensive but if you only go to the base station, it doesn't cost anything and is still worth the trip in my opinion. They have a lot of interesting things about the railway and its history. Plus, you get some neat views of the train and beautiful views of the mountain.

One of my favorite things to do in summer is drive a loop through the mountains. Take the Kancamagus Highway to Conway, take rt.16 to North Conway, go west on rt. 302 (which goes right by Mount Washington and the entrance to the Cog Railway) till it joins rt. 3. Take rt. 3 to 93. Take 93 south back to Lincoln. It's a beautiful loop that takes a little over 2 hours if you drive right through but there are lots of places to stop and lots of things to see. There are lots of rest areas in scenic locations that are great for a picnic lunch. I try to drive that loop every summer, although I haven't been able to for a couple of years. It's nice because North Conway's only a little over an hour from me.

Have a great trip.

DITTO! NO roadsigns! Took us 5 hrs to find Kennywood when I stopped with the gkids in 2007.
Kennywood in Pittsburgh is an historic amusement park and a lot cheaper than the mouse, the whale, or the brewery.
There is a museum devoted to the working man also, and some preserved Underground Railroad stops.

In PHILLY I always wanted to see the Mutter Museum (?) It's a medical museum, great for boys and nurses who can't get enough of the gross stuff.

Wanted to see the White Mts for many years now. And yep-do know the state slogan.
Dallas is a nightmare to drive in, Pittsburg won't scare us. If we're near you we'll at least wave!!

I have fond memories of the "Pittsburg" area, I spent 4 days there exploring the logging roads, fishing on First Connecticut Lake, checking out the many moose that come out at dusk and dawn along Route 3, and even went into Canada for part of a day.
Oh, but then again maybe you aren't talking about Pittsburg, New Hampshire.

I am seriously considering a vacation at White Mountains this Summer, too. Just myself & a ladyfriend. We are both seniors & from what we have read we may enjoy it.

Hi Grama,
The cog is highly overrated as far as I'm concerned, when if what you want is just to get to the top of the mountain you can take the auto road for far less money;-)
If you go, be sure to bring something warm to wear as even on a hot July day it can be quite cold up at the top.
New Hampshire is one big tourist trap so you won't lack for things to see and do, and the prices reflect it. But if you pack your lunches and avoid the tourist traps (things like riding the cog and Polly's Pancake House;-) you can save a ton of money and still see all of the natural beauty that is NH for free.
We live about an hour south of the mountains. Dh and I often pack a nice big lunch and drive up there to spend the day seeing the sights and it doesn't cost us anything but gas money.
If you have any other questions just holler.
