Unusual Farmers Market

I was in Curaçao last week and saw a very unusual farmers market. From the street side it looks normal, but the unusual part is that all of the vendors come from Venezuela. They take these very shaky looking old boats about 35 to 40 miles across the ocean to get to this market. This was a market for fresh produce and a few other food products. It sounds like most food is imported due to poor growing conditions.

Their boats are right behind their stands so they can load and unload.

They are not real friendly to tourists because they know you can't take it home with you, so you probably won't buy much. This market is mostly for the locals.

They had a set up like that in China along one of the rivers. I was on the river and didn't get to see the other side though. I love the colors on those boats.

They told us a story about the color of all of the buildings. Supposedly a long time ago all buildings were white, but the sun reflected so bad it was causing migraines. So a prominent doctor convinced the governor (doctors brother) of his theory and he passed law that all buildings need to be painted in color. Guess who owned the islands only paint factory......the brothers (governor and doctor) and they are still one of the wealthiest families on the island.Unusual Farmers Market - Countryside Families

Mostly fruits, vegetables, and some things that I am not sure what they were. A lot of fish, and that area smelled horrible!!! I also saw many selling spices in much more "raw" forms than we usually see.
