Carharrts, say it aint so!

Via an urban friend on Facebook

Quote:
Carhart gear is appearing in the windows of the Hipster Outlets on Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago. Am I to understand that this clothing--once the exclusive choice of farmers, hunters and construction workers (and Dr. Dre)--will soon be the preferred garb of the skinny-jeaned and ironic?
I'm hoping the hay and horse poop that perpetually enhances my bibs will keep me from being confused with an ironic hiptster

I'm wondering just what Hipster Outlets is suggesting for footwear with the Carharts? The unzipped or loosely laced crud covered snow boots work for us as a family. Stylin'!

This could be a good thing. Next year, when they're not fashionable any longer, those urban hipsters will drop them off at the Salvation Army store.

A hipster is someone who appropriates bits of other groups' culture or style in an effort to be "ironic" or jump ahead of current trends. So in this case the hipster might think, "dude, those are totally country clothes so I'm going to wear them in the city. How ironic is that?"

Other ironic clothing statements: wearing t-shirts obtain from goodwill that bear the logos of products they dislike, clubs they've never belonged to or political candidates they didn't vote for.

Everything for these people- from what they wear to the beer they drink is a carefully thought out choice to create a brand, and identity for themselves. Personally, I think this focus on outward identity belies a lack of inward depth. It's easier to focus on what you wear than cultivating your mind or working hard to develop a skill is what I think it comes down to.

I just about live in Carharrt shorts and a few of their shirts in the summer. On a recent trip to Paris, I was asked at least once a day about what "Designer" I was wearing. They had never seen/heard of Carharrt. That and the Golden Fleece logo (a sheep suspended from ribbon) really threw the fashion conscious French for a loop!

Ironic hipster refers to big butt women whose clothes are all wrinkly because they never iron them.

Ahhh...the pendulum is swinging. This is a direct result of all those years of "fashion" where the pants were hung from the knee caps. Finally they have moved up in the fashion world and now hang their pants from the shoulders.

Last edited by suitcase_sally; 01/25/11 at 01:43 PM. Reason: spelling ("hand" changed to "hang")

But are they going to wear their bibs backwards? Or with the front hanging down with the straps flapping?

I can see it now.

How ironic.

I always grab my Carhartts when I want my butt to look especially nice! Those big pockets and stiff cotton duck work miracles for the cheeks! Don't they? don't they, hmmm?

The beginning of the end.

I expect this means it is the beginning of the end for Carharts as we know them.

City folk will enjoy them so much they'll start investing in the company, then they will want more profit from their stock so will vote to sell out and merge the company and finally ship production overseas, upon which time the quality will drop and Carharts will go out of business from lack of repeat customers.

Either that or they will be like farm pickups of old--they'll be discovered transformed into pink, lime green, turquoise, and other fashion statements. Will be modified to hold all sorts of city gadgets like touch screen this and touch screen that, just like pickups were modified with extra seat and smaller useless beds for hauling.

Since the city folk won't be out in the weather like country folk the insulating value will drop as city folks in and out of stores get overheated.

The weight of the canvas like material will be too heavy for city folk to wear comfortably so the material will get lighter in weight, kind of like sheets for a bed.

The environmental crowd will get involved to the point only material grown with sustainable growing methods will be used driving up the price beyond reason.

City folk will want on the board of directors of the company and will demand outlandish benefits and golden umbrellas.

Carharts citified? Not a good thing in the least as I see it.
