Old Cabin Update (Pics)

For those following this old cabin project. Work is going slow on the old cabin, and will until spring. Most of the ceiling is in, using the old tongue & groove that could be salvaged. Some sanding of the logs has been done.

I have been watching for a Hoosier type cabinet for the old cabin. Last week I found a treasure on Craigslist for cheap. The beautiful Sellers Kitchen Cabinet was listed as an "Antique Hutch" with one poor, out of focus pic. The tambour door was up and couldn't be seen and the cabinet didn't look like much in the pic. I could see it had the enamel top, so went to look at it. It was definitely worth the 100 mile round trip. It's now in my workshop and will keep me occupied until the weather warms up and I can get back to work on the logs. I love restoring antique furniture!

The cabinet has been painted over several times and had some pretty ugly decals on it. But, all the hinges and hardware are there and in good shape. It also has casters with ant traps.

Two enamel tops in great condition. One of the original cardboard door inserts remains, along with the brackets for a tilting flour bin with sifter.

Bread/potato tin drawer and lid.

Careful scraping with a flat razor scraper to remove 3 to 4 layers of old paint reveals the beautiful original factory stencils. The cabinet will be refinished to it's original white with blue stencils, with a new flour bin and accessories. It will be a perfect match for the old cabin.

Finding that on Craigslist was pure luck, there aren't many antiques like that around here and they are usually either way too much money or complete wrecks.

Fantastic!! We have enjoyed keeping up with the cabin's "rebirth".
Let us know when you're done. I'll be packed and ready to move in.

Great find! I have one that I refinished that is a lot like yours. It had several layers of paint and it only took me 3 years to finish it, mostly due to my procrastination. Mine has the tambour door but it does not go all the way across. It has a cabinet under the flour bin for the bowl to sift into. I now use mine as my computer desk. I have got to learn to post pictures.

Love that cabinet! I've been searching for one for my kitchen for a while. Maybe one day I'll find one as nice as yours!

That's a lovely old Hoosier cupboard ChalkCreek. This is the link to the place where I got all the pieces I needed to restore mine. They were good folks to work with and their prices weren't bad either.

Yes, I'm very familiar with Kennedy Hardware. I'd like to see a pic of yours.

Your right its a great treasure! I have one concernor observation. Not wanting to be rude, but are you going to redo the fireplace.? Those white bricks just don't seem to match the early era cabin. Of course I have never been out in that part of the country and seen old cabins, maybe it is the style. I was just interested in what your thoughts were. Again no offense meant just curious. I still love the cabin. You are such a gifted person and so lucky to have such a neat dwelling to work with. I know it will be a rewarding venture when it is done.

That's not rude at all, that fireplace is ugly. It is going to refaced with rock from the property. We are going to close it in and put a wood cookstove in front of it.

Funny, I was going to ask if it would be faced with river rock or something similar also ! But seeing all the things you do and love I figured you had something in mind. I wonder why a white brick fire place was built in the log cabin ? Any history ?

The cabin was built between 1900-1920, according to some old-timers here that remember it. The people we bought the place from were from another state. They put up the tongue and groove and put in that fireplace sometime in the 70's and used it for an occasional weekend getaway. By the time we bought, the cabin was in bad shape. We were too busy and strapped financially building our house, barns, shop, and so on to mess with it. It sat for another 20 years, slowly deteriorating, until I decided I couldn't stand to see it in such sorry shape. It would be a shame to lose it. Luckily, dh agreed with me.

Love everything! The cabin is gorgeous! And the cabinet is lovely as is. I think there is great charm in layers of old paint. But to each his own. The cabinet is in remarkably good shape. Have fun!

Love the cabin also, Wildwood Flower, I am your neighbor here in Okla. I go to Wagoner often to an antique mall. It is a nice cabinet. A cabinet like that will run somewhere around 295.00 to 495.00 most of the time if a person knows what they are worth.
