Wonderful afternoon

I took all of the kids & my aunt to visit an elderly couple today. They are members of our church, but have not been able to attend for some time because the man can't walk very well.

Anyway, he is 95 & she is 94. The have been married 71 years!! We went to hear stories of yesteryear. They told us of their childhood & a lot of things they did as kids & young adults. How when first married they lived off of $10 a month!

The lady used to quilt but had to give it up because she had carpal tunnel. She didn't want surgery & said her hands didn't hurt anymore once she stopped quilting. She showed us some of her quilts & they were breathtaking! I took the one I made to show her & she loved it. She also asked me if I would like to have her quilting frame since she no longer uses it. She would love to see it go to someone that will use it. I was thrilled!! I will pick it up in a few weeks.

The afternoon was just great. The knowledge & stories they passed on to us will not be forgotten. My kids absolutely loved listening to them. I hope to spend some more time with them before it is too late. Although at 94, the lady is a fit as someone 30 years younger. Gets around great & is just amazing to watch.

If any of you have the chance, visit the elderly or shut ins. Listen to their stories & learn from them. There are so many things they can teach us. I know they were very happy for the company & very happy to have the kids there. So many are just lonely & long for someone to talk to & share things with. I hope to pick the lady up & bring her here sometime in the future. Wealth of knowledge in that couple.

Yes.. have always said if you can find an old friend in an "old timer" you will gain alot of wisdom in homesteading and life. Just the other day my husband and I were talking about the old timers in our area. There aren't many left. The old farmer where we use to get hay a 50 cents a bale 30 years ago is long gone as is most of the small dairy farms around us now too. I have always enjoyed listening to their stories..the church dinner with all the fixins' for 24 cents a family and all. After we talked for a while we looked at each other and said.."my gosh..guess we are the old timers now" It's funny how you climb up that ladder of life and before you know it your almost at the top. I do miss these people for basic no nonsense knowledge of so many things. Am grateful for the many authors that have the talent to write about them so they are forever in words. Can still remember my husband saying.."once they start to lean on the pick up or bend done to talk on one knee..we'll be here for a while talking"..Good Times..

Heart-warming post. I hope you and your family will be able to spend many more wonderful afternoons with this couple. I'm absolutely certain the afternoon was wonderful for them, as well.

As much as you enjoyed your afternoon, I'm sure they enjoyed it even more. Once people are home bound, having visitors means so much to them.

Our church youth visit the homebound and it has been a priviledge for them to get to know the seniors. Good on you!
