Doggie Escape Artist
Just a rant, I guess, 'cause I don't see how anyone could help me without actually seeing my yard.
We have a Norwegian Elkhound - she's about 40 lbs., a mid-size dog, 3 years old or so. Absolute sweetheart; we've owned her for about a year and a half.
Now suddenly she's been getting out of our yard and wandering down the street. She got out a couple times in the past, but we fixed (or at least we thought so) all the ways she could be getting out. This time we've done everything we can think of and I still got a call from a neighbor today, where she'd turned up. Thank goodness I've got a tag on her with our phone number.
We have a total of 1.5 acres and about 2/3 of that is fenced with chain-link. Most of the fence is in good shape, though there are a few weak spots, that my husband went out yesterday and shored up as well as he could. We've taken everything away that she could be climbing up on to jump over (she did that once, with some rocks piled up) and I'm just at my wit's end!
Also have 2 other dogs, but they're big and I guess can't squeeze through wherever she's getting through.
At this point I'm not completely ruling out the possibility that she's *climbing the fence.* She climbed up a ladder once and we had to get her down from the roof.
Maya is now snoozing on our sofa - I'm gonna have to keep her indoors all day now and watch her when she goes out. Or tie her on a lead, if I have to leave her alone out there. Went camping last weekend and had to take her with us, though she prefers (ironically) to stay home instead; who knows where she'd have ended up?
Aaaaahrgh!

The choices I'd suggest are:
hot wire along the bottom & top of your current fence.
or (if you know she's not climbing)
Get 3' chicken wire, shape it into an "L" lay the 1 ft part on the ground & wire the 2 ft part to your exisiting fence. Cover the part on the ground with soil. Guaranteed she won't dig under the fence.
Have fun - Doncha hate it when they're sneakier/smarter than you?

Try taking her for a walk in the morning. She doesn't have to heel beside you, she can be on a 20' lead. If you can ride a bike and get her running, that's even better (not on a 20' lead!)

Nope, she's not in heat. All of our pups are "fixed."
You may be right about the walk. We're accustomed to just send 'em into the yard and let them play together, figuring they'll get plenty of exercise that way, patrolling the perimeter-- and for the boys, apparently this is enough. But I think you're right, Maya likes to go for walks. That was one thing she did like about going camping, lots of walks.
I live on a busy road though and it's not always easy to walk down the road with a dog -- but 9 am or so when there's not much traffic I might be able to do it. It'll be good for me to get the exercise too!
Funny, the only time she's done this is in the morning around 9. That's probably why! She's saying, "Mom, I *told you,* I wanna go for a walk, with or without you!" LOL!

I'd suggest exercise and adding electric to your fence. We had a beagle/terrier mix, "Sparky" when I was growing up, and Daddy couldn't keep him in the fence. He had a great big yard with a nice fence, tons of attention and lots going on at home, but he would get out. Daddy put two hot wires on the fence and he never got out again.

My dogs are "good" as long as they get a daily walk.
