I have a question about cobwebs!

What spider makes cobwebs?

Obviously my house is overrun with them, but I can never find the little pests.

The deadly Cob spider. Cob spiders have been known to overtake entire towns on the south coast and render them into trailer parks. Ironically, Cob Spiders love moths, but their only weakness is Mothra. You need to order a young Mothra from the Tokyo Trading Company.

All spiders do. Cobwebs are what they make to use as their highways system across ceilings, walls, corners. Not talking about round spider webs like nets that get made to trap other insects.

If you can't find the spiders look for them at night with a flashlight after all the lights are out, that's when they come out to hunt.

No, not really. It's a good sign to you that the spiders are doing their jobs. If you have lots of cobwebs it means your house is not being over run with other much worse insects that the spiders hunt. It's better to have lots of spiders hunting those insects than it is to not have the spiders. Also, cobwebs are very good for collecting dust and other pollutants and easy to sweep or vacuum away because they're so visible. Be happy that you have cobwebs. Cobwebs and spider nets are a beautiful thing.

They come out of corn. doesn"t matter if its fresh, canned or frozen. That is why they are called COBwebs. We really like corn at my house. When we were remodeling one year my neice who was about 9yo asked if I ever dusted I told her of course I do I put down a fresh coat this morning.

I have cobwebs appear at my house, too. But the only time I actually see a spider is in the shower, when I am wet, naked and have shampoo in my hair.

I have learned they are not repulsed by screaming.

Naturelover, that is a beautiful web. Cobwebs may be unwanted; but the spiders, themselves, are more helpful than harmful.

David found a most unusual spiderweb with a banana spider in it. The web was beautiful and, when David touched it, the spder started shaking it. (This spider is territorial and will stay there until something comes along it cannot defend against.) David caught a grasshopper and put near it and that spider had a good meal. He took a video of that spider wrapping up the grasshopper in its web; but the video is too large to post here.

I will go see if I can get a picture of its web and place here. This is it (found on outside of house). The white lines and white dots you see on this picture are parts of the web. The web is quite large; but I could not get a good pic of it. (The large grasshopper it wrapped up is gone; so it took less than 24 hrs for it to eat that grasshopper..eating part of its own web in the process. It reminds me of "Jacog's ladder". (According to a couple of websites, this web has strands in it that have been proven to be 4 times stronger than steel.)

That's a Garden Spider, not a Banana Spider

Spiders dont "eat" the solid parts of insects.
They suck out the juices and then cut the carcass out of the web

I want to train orb weaver spiders to spin their webs in my windows, so I won't have to have screens.

Y'all are funny!

We don't spray our house for bugs so I guess the spiders are doing our extermination job for us. I've never seen any bugs in the house except flies, moths, etc. that come in when the door is open (and with all the dogs in the house it gets opened a lot).

I'm contemplating leaving all the cobwebs until after Halloween...a natural decoration.

I think I must live in the spider capital of the world here in western NC. I see tiny ones the size of a pen point up to the big wolf spiders. We have just learned to live together, sigh.

I used to leave the back porch light on but stopped because every night huge spiderwebs would appear to catch the bugs that were attracted to the light. I would walk into spider webs every day, yuck! No more outside lights!

Dixielee, I had the same problem with the outside light at the front door, but then I changed it out to one of the yellow bug light bulbs (available in compact florescent) and no longer have the problem. Maybe give it a try.

Good idea rb. I have seen those yellow lights but didn't realize they didn't attract bugs! I will try it. My motion lights don't always come on and I'm not crazy about walking in at night in the dark.
