Thank you.

I heard sonic booms often when I was a child, and the cause was covered in class. I had forgotten that, though.

We used to hear/feel sonic booms in Enid OK in the mid 70s. Vance AFB practiced over the suburbs. On the good side, the pilots used to waggle their wings at us if we jumped and waved a them.

Darned Klingons. Give 'em a Bird of Prey and they want to show off.

Judging from the angles and the timer on the camera, that looks more like a compression shockwave than a plane breaking the sound barrier. Boy I messed up that explanation. Kari has is right. Here is a mind numbing explanation with pictures:

A plane can generate them at near sonic speeds and not break the sound barrier, and they really aren't shock waves. Thanks Kari, I learned something new.

Looks like a Prandtl–Glauert singularity effect. I have been fortunate enough to see these a few times in my life. It is quite the experience and one of those things you never forget.

The kiddos and I looked up some amazing videos like that for a school lesson one time. Fascinating.
