Truly a sad day...they state the ceremony will be in his honor, flags at half-staff, and the group will compete and march in tonight for the opening ceremony.

The audio is terrible on NBC. It's nearly impossible to understand the announcements. Snow boarding into the maple leaf of torches was cool.

Canadian Friends - I think this is a Wonderful Opening Ceremony.

The technical staff must be absolutely outstanding to pull the backgrounds and lights and flying gear for the artists to put on what they've been doing.
Totally fascinating - and nicely done. (and I've not seen the very end YET).

Thanks Canada.

Proud to be Canadian tonight. It was an excellent ceremony. The boy "flying" over the prairies was my fav part. Watching and listening to KD Lang gave me goose bumps through the entire song.

I'm proud too. I loved the whole show, it was all very stirring and brought tears to my eyes. With me doing crystal healing I was thrilled to see that the indoor and outdoor cauldrons looked like crystals, that was a treat for me to see that. So good to see Gretsky lighting the outdoor cauldron.

At one point it looked like whales were swimming across the stadium floor, that was so cool!

My 11 yr old thought kd lang was a man! Yeah, she was in a suit, but I think her voice is very feminine. My son was confused. I did not like the singer at the beginning, the woman in the blue dress with the big bow on her shoulder. I thought she might break her ankle in those shoes! I also didn't care for the opera singer who sang the Olympic anthem. She has a lovely voice, but we couldn't understand the lyrics at all. At one point my DD asked me if she was singing in French, but I was pretty sure it was English.

I thought it was very neat that one of the Olympic flag bearers was a gold medalist from 1948.

I felt so bad for the Georgian team. It was nice that everyone gave them a standing ovation, but so sad that their teammate died. What a tragedy.

The girl in Blue was Nelly Furtado. She's a BC Native. I have to say it was not bad The whale part was well done along with most every thing else. THough I was bored out my skull by the VANOC guy but I guess he always is just that... (Better to say nothing at all)

It really was spectacular...well done Canada! I could've done without the poetry reading, but hey that's me. I was watching Nellie Furtado's shoes too...not only was she wearing them, she was walking around on the stage I'm normally am not a kd lang fan, but she was fabulous(love that song!!).
And the final torch bearer was Gretzky...I'm shocked, shocked I tell ya He was the LAST person on my list The whole show was great.
As for the luge accident...how horrific. If you've watched the video, it is nauseating. So much 20/20 hindsight....like why those concrete poles weren't padded. I feel so badly for all of the officials, etc who were in charge of the luge, they must feel awful.

Watched it at work last night. I normally dont get too rah rah over the Olympics but I was curious to see how Canada was going to project itself to the world. It was special and I enjoyed it very much. I liked the Poetry Stomp - nice to hear us brag about ourselves once in while. Two of the tribal dancers were from Manitoulin.

The young man killed in the luge accident was traveling at 145km/hour when he hit that pole. Thats roughly about 100miles/hour. He was my sons age. The luge track has been controversial for months, sad to see that it seems as dangerous as was predicted.

This country, sea to sea is breathtakingly beautiful. If you were left with an image of fresh, clean air and a vastness of space and sky, then you saw what we see as we live our lives in the Northland.

I enjoyed the opening ceremonies. I really liked Measha Brueggergosman's operatic performance of the the Olympic Hymn, the poetry reading and KD Lang's performance. I thought that it was a nice representation of the diversity of the people and culture of Canada and was pleased to see the inclusion of the indigenous people. So often, the aboriginal people are left out of Olympic ceremonies around the world. Kudos to Canada!

you need to find more titches! I loved the use of simple strips of fabric to become different things, just loved the simplicity of the whole thing. Especially after the Chinese thing--I can appreciate how complicated and creative it was(the Chinese ceremonies), but it was just overwhelming...and the expense....

HA! I love the Biathalon too! that's the event I would do if I could do one, and yes strapping guy candy is a big plus!

How did Bobby Orr and Gretzky get so old??????????????? wah!

Just found a clip of kd lang's performance. She really blew me away(though did have fun trying to convince my mom on the phone this morning, that that "great singer who sang the beautiful song" was a WOMAN )

I thought the same thing. I didn't even recognize Bobby Orr. I saw him and thought "Now he looks familiar, who's that?" And then they announced his name. Woah, how did that happen?

I love Donald Sutherland's voice. He's been the voice behind all the Olympic commercials here all year.

I was impressed by the stamina of all those Native dancers.

I thought the whole thing was just wonderful! I was so unimpressed with Canada's preview at the last Winter Olympics, I had wondered how they were going to do with Vancouver's opening. But it was just awesome!

I don't think much of the cauldron tho....but that's just me.

That was a terrible tragadey about the Georgian sledder!

Fantastic opening. I hope all their "glitches" and problems are over now...Really a fascinating opening.
