I make my own and I've never owned a yogurt maker. In the winter I use the oven - and oven light works or I can set my oven for 100 degrees, and in the summer I put it in an ice chest out on the back deck with the yogurt and a bottle of hot water. I use quart jars for mine, since we'll often go through a quart a day. We usually add fruit to ours, often frozen blueberries or strawberries that we have put up, and occasionally our home canned blueberries.
