Tell me about Missouri

We are planning on moving to MO later this spring and are looking at the Alton area, the Thayer area or the West Plains area (we are open to anything in southern MO)

Anyway, I know a lot of you live in MO, tell me about it. What do you like about it? What do you hate about it? Is house insurance expensive there? What is your favorite thing? Is flooding a problem in a lot of areas? Are car tags expensive?

I think there are several on this forum from just that area! Rocks and hills. Not so expensive to live - but that is usually judged as a comparison to what you are used to paying. I was born and raised there. Most land is not use for crop farming. There used to be small dairy farms now I see more beef cattle around. Bugs, rocks, tornadoes, ice storms. Friendly people, four seasons, lots of green!

Hope others will chime in for you. There is a lot to like. It would be nice to know where

We have a place east of Alton, just off of 160. It's the most beautiful terrain in the universe!

The people are great, too.

Jobs are scarce, and pay is low.

Ticks and chiggers are bad during the summer.

Yes, low spots flood, but that is true anywhere. When we get a gully washer, we might not be able to get out that day.

Get a large generator, too. Ice and snow in the winter usually manage to knock out the power for a few days.

If you are retiring, one thing to consider is health care. There is a clinic there in Alton with a Nurse Practitioner or Physician's Assistant, and they have the wonderful AirEvac system. But, if you need a specialist or a hospital, it's a 45 minute drive to West Plains. West Plains doesn't even have all the specialists, and you may have to go to Springfield or Mountain Home, Arkansas, for higher tech care.

Taxes and insurance are reasonable, but you can't get insurance if you have certain breeds of dogs. Some insurance companies won't insure you if you have wood heat, too.

If high speed internet access is important, don't buy too far out of town. DSL hasn't reached everywhere yet.

I may know someone with 12 acres and a house for sale. PM me if you are interested and I'll call and check.

I'm an hour or so west of West Plains. I've been here for 10 years and will never move willingly. The road I live on floods a few times a year, and washes out every few years, but is passible in a few days.

Taxes are low. I have 50 acres of woods with no buildings and my tax bill is less than $20. The annual property tax on cars and stuff can be high though.

My favorite thing: My last real job before I moved here I, at times, had to go through two security check points befor I could get to a window and see out; here I have bald eagles watch me work. The land can be tough, but it is also wonderful and vibrant.
