Every once in a while I get off this road...

and head into town to stock up on food! Today Brady took me to the grocery store since he has four-wheel drive and we have been home a lot lately. Walking through the store there were moments of great sticker shock- a pan of frozen lasagna was $11.99. Seriously??? $11.99??? for frozen lasagna... Wow~

I saw a package of frozen fish that was $24.99. I didn't buy that either. Brady- who doesn't get to the grocery store very often was walking around saying, "That is too expensive," or "They want that much for that?" We got our basics and escaped back to the hills. It is cheaper out here... lol

What has "sticker-shocked" you lately?

Gruyere cheese.

I needed it for an experimental recipe, but holy Swiss cow is it expensive!

Seven bucks for half a pound.

almost anything that's "prepared"....and BREAD! holy high priced wheat!batman! $3.50 for a 1lb loaf of SaraLee 12grain. And when I went to the Claussen Bakery section (local German bakery) I almost passed out! $5.00 for a 1lb loaf of plain wheat.

Interestingly, Pizzas haven't gone up much, nor have chips. heh. go figure.

I never buy chips. I recently looked at them and it is 3.99 for a bag of Doritos. Really, 4 bucks for a bag of cornchips. Wow. A bottle of pop can be a buck and a half. I never buy that stuff, I guess that is why I was shocked.

I refuse to buy corn chips anymore. I make my own.

I live where the Hispanic population is huge, so the markets always have big bags of corn tortillas on sale for 99c. You cut them into 6 wedges, place in a single layer on a baking sheet, and put in a medium oven for 15-20 minutes to crisp (check often so they don't over-brown). Healthier because they are baked and unsalted........and CHEAP.

I make my own brown sugar, too. I guess I'm weird.

Dog and cat food. That stuff just keeps going up, up, up! Even the el cheapo brands are being raised! Cheaper to make your own than to feed the "good" stuff!

Meat of any kind is way up from when I used to buy it, not raise our own. And hair coloring! When did it get so expensive? I saw an ad the other day for some that was 15.00. Woohee. Sure makes you glad to live simply and more frugal. Jan in Co

We went to the store yesterday. Don't shop at the store much since we're seldom home (truck drivers). Ground Beef was $1.49 lb so I got 12 lbs of it since that's a great price (compared to $2.49+ per lb usually). Then my SO walked down to look at the ribeye's ... o.O $8.69 a lb!!! I just looked at him and raised my eyebrow and he laughed and walked on down the aisle. lol

A standing rib roast; which I had no intention of buying but noticed when I was picking up some ground beef. Get this, it was $106.00!! Don`t think I`ve ever had a standing rib roast, but i`m thinking you may be able to buy a whole cow for not much more...ok maybe around a thousand dollars more but STILL!!

Every type of apple at the supercenter was $ 1.47 per lb, except Honeycrisp, it was $ 2.47. Apples are becoming a luxury item.

Well, this is actually good sticker shock....

A couple weeks ago I was at Giant Eagle to pick up a few things and saw in the add that they had Emerald dry roasted peanuts for $2 per 16 oz jar. Figured I would get a jar as a treat for us.

When I got to the shelf, each jar had a dollar off coupon so I decided to splurge and get 10 of them. When I got to the checkout it turned out that they were ringing up as $1.69 a piece. I told the checkout person but she said that was the price. So I got each jar for 69 cents. Taht was definately sticker shock.

Mike

We have our own beef and I always have sticker shock when I see how much they want for steak, hamburger or just stew beef!!!!

I love the Oatnut bread (Arnold's) and that seems to jump a little every time I purchase it...

Not food related but I just priced new tires for my 3/4 ton GMC pickup at Les Schwuab at they were $1200 mounted. Its been a few years since I bought a set of tires but good grief I was shocked.

Here's something to calm y'all down and keep you from having heart attacks. I got butter at Martin's for $1.86 a pound. You better believe I stocked up. I make some of our butter, but since I also bake with butter, we use a lot. I don't use margerine or Crisco, just butter, lard and olive oil

Got groceries the last time before Christmas and the ice cream I normally buy has gone up $.35 per half gallon just in the last two months.

The price of gluten-free foods is breathtaking. I miss pretzels terribly, and someone told me that a local grocery store had gluten-free pretzels. A little bag was over $8. No way, not even for a New Year's Eve treat.
