Nutritional Benefits of Organic vs Conventional Produce

An excellent and well-balanced review of this issue can be found here:

http://www.slate.com/id/2224342/

I especially agree with what the author says about both sides cherry-picking studies that support their pre-conceived notions.

Bottom line, buy local, especially if you know the grower.

An interesting article, thanks. Yeah, I figure just about any research article on anything (especially health related) usually is just trying to prove an already desired result. From reading a variety of books on food issues, it just seems like focusing on any given substance (vitamins, antioxidents) is missing the big picture. And I'd agree that getting people to eat more vegetables is more important than whether they are organic or not, and will probably ultimately help both conventional and organic producers too!

I get frustrated too with the costs of organic products, though I understand it mostly, I just can't afford it, which is why I grow my own when I can. I do figure, like the article, that if all else is equal (nutritionally) than at least the organic version was a bit lighter on the environment and the farm workers were exposed to less chemicals as well.

It's kind of like a hybrid car--people argue that over the lifetime of the car the expense is the same as for a conventional car. But if that's true, and they still use less gas and produce less emissions, isn't that a good outcome? FWIW, I can't afford a hybrid car either, LOL
