Kidron advice wanted

Me and the Mrs. are kicking around the idea of a trip to Kidron/Holmes County this fall (Oct-Nov). In the past we've stayed at one of the budget motels in New Philly. This time we are trying to stay an extra day or two and trying to trim our trip budget as well. What I was wondering is if anyone knew a some truly budget lodgings (please feel free to insert the word cheap, frugal, or dive) in the area. The more we save on lodgings the more good stuff I can bring back home with us. The Priceline sites have rooms ranging from $70-$160 a night. We don't want to buy the room, just sleep in it a few nights. I can pass on a pillow mint or fruity guava shampoo. I like dropping in on HT but I can live without it for a week, so WI-FI access is not an issue. Restraunt? Not for this kid, not with some of the eatin places up there and a Wally World to shop in--I can turn out some mean dutch oven biscuits, no better dessert than crunchy grapes and Heinies cheese.
So, anyone care to share their suggestions for lodgings?
Best I've found so far is a RhodeInn in Wooster.

no suggestion on lodging but if you are going to be in the area nov 6 & 7 there is a huge exotic animal/exotic livestock auction at mt hope. Definately worth the look. Better then going to the zoo

Thanks for the link Charlie, we'll be a givin it a gander. I don't mean to sound dense, but what kind of exotic animals would they be selling in Mt. Hope? Been about 4 years since we was there, matter of fact the leather work belt I use I got in Mt. Hope. Didn't expect to be seeing anything all that exotic in that area.
Now I'll allow as it would be exotic to see one of the Yoders pulling a wagon with reindeer, or a Koblintz logging with an asian elephant, but I don't recall seeing even oxen being used in a field.

well last auction had whitetail, elk, zebra, camels, yaks, donkeys, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, all manner of gamebirds and poultry and rabbits, and small furry things like raccoons and such. All legal to sell. Its an all weekend affair. Its just real neat. Mostly the petting zoos are buying but anyone can go. The exotic sales are held three weekends out of the year. Also at the exotic sale is TONS of fencing and caging and supplies.

If your going to Kidron and Mt. Hope I would stay in Wooster. I dont know what pricing would be but driving cost would be less than driving from New Philly. Also the exotic sale is cool, but crazy. Some people pay outrages amounts of money. I will most likely be there selling rabbits and birds(even regular livestock sell better).

Put "wooster ohio hotels" in a Google search and you'll get a nice list of possible-maybe's. Econo Lodge there is about $55 a night and includes breakfast.

Definately check out the Lehman's store in Kidron (on the square). I love the Lehmans catalog, and my sister in law went to the store. There are pictures of it online, I think, at www.Lehmans.com. It is my dream to go there...

Having grown-up in the Coshocton/Wooster area, I can't help but wonder what your interest in Kidron might be. As I recall, Kidron was hardly worth driving out of your way for 40 years ago. What's the attraction?

Lehmans; Kidron-Sonnenburg Heritage Center; Longhedges Fiber Studio; and several little shops - plus great scenery!

I guess my growing up near there was a wasted opportunity.

I like the area. That would be reason in and of itself. It is a relaxing trip for us. As I mentioned earlier I find things I like to bring back with us. Found some of the best peppered bacon and smoked chops I've ever had in that area. We also found a spot that sold some really good fruit wine. Wine, of all things! I bet that has the preachers going on fire and brimstone and all that there. I like to go through the Lehmans store, I'd just advise folks to do their price homework before they go as a lot of their prices are quite inflated. That being said some things are just easier to find there and reasonably priced.

Sounds like the auction would be fun to see if we was there that weekend.

The driving wasn't a problem, we do quite a bit of it while we're up there as we like to drive the back roads and look a farms. Like I said, looks like Wooster was our best bet for lodging (the Mrs. is not an Oct./Nov. camper), about $20 less than the New Philly room we used in the past, and $20 would more than cover our gas to drive around.

There were a few "vintage" hotels in Wooster that had weekly & monthly rates with I lived there, but that was a lifetime ago. I didn't know much about them back then, and have no idea what exists there today.

I've got to tell you; the hotel prices in that area really blow me away. It's easy to get weekday hotel rates in Las Vegas for under $20/night. That's where I run away to. Since I used to live in Las Vegas, I've turned doing Las Vegas on the cheap into a science, even writing a book on the subject. The thought of spending $70 on a rural motel in Ohio just shorts my brain out.

We've been there twice, and I can't wait to go again.
Lehman's was in the process of major remodeling when we were last there----they were tearing down several buildings next to them so they could expand.

In was fun visiting the cattle barn across the street from Lehmans, the fabric store behind them and the only restaurant in town that was in the basement of a "department" store.
Oh, yes-----also the flea market vendors....and the ice cream wagon,

I'm looking forward to seeing Lehman's new building.
Hopefully they've expanded their plumbing facilities.

They use to have just 2 toilets total, for the bus loads of people that stopped in. Never mind your sex----everyone waited in the same line to use those 2 toilets

I was at the remodeled Lehmans in April and it is really great. There are pictures on my blog, most likely posted in April. I can't help with hotels as it is within driving distance for us.

And Nevada, you would not recognize the area now, it is a HUGE tourist attraction.

Breitenbach wine is the best reason to go to "Amish." Gotta have something to go with all that cheese.

you could check in Berlin... I know that their sign outside says- rooms $59.99
Berlin is a very touristy (is that word??) area, but it is really nice over that way. and then you can walk to all those little shops in Berlin. Chili Pepper Trading Co. is my favorite!! I know it has absolutely nothing to do with the "Amish" area... but I live around here and don't have much desire to see the "amish" stuff!!

Have you ever been over to Charm while you were here? That is a pretty neat little town, Keim Lumber (kinda similar to Lehmans) and a few little shops, also there is a Kidron Sports shop in Charm.

Since you have been here before you kinda know what is around...have a great time no matter what you do!

My BIL has a wine shop and sells Breitenbach wine. You can sample all the different kinds for a quarter. I have tried pretty much all of them- not all at once- and they are all excellent.
