Please, Tell me about the High Point, NC area

I have an opportunity if I decide to take it to work for a big software company in High Point, NC. All I know about it is that it is the furniture capital. But, I need to know about the area, how much can I expect to pay for land, cost of living, weather and such. I had rather not rely on stat's and state run info sites. I live north of Birmingham, AL now. Would the cost of living be comparable? If you know. It would mean a 50% increase in pay. All of my family is around here except for my youngest son who is in the process of moving to Charleston, SC.
Thanks, Gary

I am a native North Carolinian and if I wanted to learn more about High Point I'd go to this website and look around

High Point, NC

If you scroll down towards the bottom of the page there is a Forum with over 600,000 members, over 1,500 mentions of High Point. I use this website when I want to find out about places I might like to live.

You can also look at the Winston-Salem Journal online to get a little bit of an idea of the news in the surrounding area which is the Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point area. Winston-Salem Journal.

Charleston is not too far from there - 5-6 hours maybe - and it's not a really long drive back down to Alabama. Not like across country anyway. (I think we could drive from Caldwell County, NC (which is about 2 hours west of HP) to somewhere inside the MS state line in just about 10 hours).

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Ok first, lemme say I'm horribly jealous, cause I've been job hunting for a year - although I haven't been willing to relocate. Good luck to you.

Software company should be pretty stable here as technology has taken the lead in the "triad" area.

I was born in NC about 1 hour from Hight Point. The furniture industry has dissipated along with textiles, etc. and is not as dominant as 20 years ago.

It get [I]really [I]hot here in the summer, and about 20 F lowest in winters.

I don't know the cost of land/living in AL, but be careful here of all the new contruction homes, developments, etc. EVEN if they call theirselves somewhat rural.

IMO, look for a quality older home and property if you come here.

Let us know what happens!

With all the Interstate Highways in the area, it's not hard to find a place out of town, but still with an easy commute.
I grew up about 40 miles from there, and it's not a bad area
