back pain update

So they said they couldnt find anythin wrong in the x-rays. so I made an apt. today. Went and saw a diffrent dr, and he did some tests. Apparently&7 Im losing feeling in my left leg and foot. So he gave e ore pills so he had the office galls call my insurance company to see if they could run more tests. I will have an apt. in ten to thirteen days. But until then Im on bed rest...still and the pain pills arnt helping.

anyway hows everyone else?

Oh, I feel so sorry for you and sure hope the time passes quickly for you until that next appointment. When DH was going through this, it took 2 neurosurgeon visits to get the correct diagnosis. After the tests, they can know exactly how to treat you so that you'll not have the pain level you're having now. DH is taking the shots in the back/spine to numb that one nerve that's causing all his pain, but they had to know for sure before they set up the shot regimen for him. He gets a series of 3 shots about every 6 months. He goes to the local outpatient clinic, they administer the shot, keep him about an hour for observation and then I drive him home and he rests the remainder of the day. He got one this past Friday. On Saturday, he mowed the yard, washed the car, washed the dog, did the weedeating, worked in the garden until almost dark, and only came inside because it was getting too dark to do any work outside.

I'm telling you all this so you can start now developing your mental picture of how good your life is going to be when they finish these tests and get you set up on a pain control regimen. Hang in there!

Did your doc give you amitriptylin?

I've had back issues for over twenty years (don't try to catch a falling butchered hog... it's going to hit the ground anyway...:grit)

Last month I got a charley horse, the next day my back flared up, and then my calves started burning, then my toes. The back got so bad I broke down and visited a doc.......... after 500 in x rays and exam, he said there was nothing wrong with my back.

Gave me the amitriptylin, and it turned me into a zombie, and did nothing for the problem, didn't keep the pain away... just made me sleep for over sixteen hours a day...

Two weeks later, the back pain went away, now all that's left is for my toe's pain to go away... six weeks later...

thank you soulsurviver for the lovely picture of being able to get things done! I cant wait...its so irritating. Im not even allowed to ride my mare! and I just recently got drs ok to do it again!
Texican, Im on soma, codeine and now something else(forgot the name) I hate taking all these darn pills. As for the zombie thing, thats what iv got going on...as well as still having the pain around.Im very glad everything(for the most part for you is better) Im so fed up of sleeping and the internet. I cant drive, so i cant go to the library to get some new books. All Iv got to entertain me right now is watching my creepy/odd next door folks and playing with my rat who just wants to cuddle and not learn tricks.
anyway sorry for my rambling guys....
my gosh! I think the bull next door is dying! its not the normal prolonged moo/heaving that says "im horny and want to hump everything" its more"pain pain im in pain" kinda thing...hmmm...should i get my flashlight and check?

Maybe folks here could suggest some online sites that could help you pass the time better.

I'll start. I pass my time entering online sweepstakes. I try to dream about how I'm going to either use my prize or who I'm going to gift with the prize when I win big.
http://www.online-sweepstakes.com/

They have a discussion forum you can join to find out more about which sweepstakes are worth entering and which ones you want to steer clear of. It's something to pass the time, and you never know, you might win something you could really use. I really enjoy caption contests the most, but they don't usually offer a prize, other than recognition for the winning caption.

Just a word of warnign about shots of cortisone in the back/spine. One of my friends sonin-law just had to have hip replacement surgery as the shots destroyed the bone in both his hips! He's 32 years old and walks like an old man. He had back issues and the Dr's never told him this posible sideeffect from the shots!

I would start calling them every day asking for an MRI. Make appts and go up there screaming in pain begging for an MRI. X-rays and "tests" will show nothing, you need an MRI and probably a nerve conduction study to see if you have any damaged nerves. But, the MRI is the most important thing for you. You should go up there and be relentless on how bad you need an MRI.

Sorry, Im used to dealing with the VA and thats the way I had to be to get MRI's. It will show whats going on in your back though. I had multiple X-rays which showed nothing before my MRI finally revealed what all was wrong.

I feel for you, I really hope they stopp messing you around and do the MRI so you can finally figure out what to do. I dont understand Dr's now days.

Hi, I'm not sure if you're familiar with Dr. Sarno's work, but he believes that there is a direct correlation between back pain and stress/depression. I have found it to be true, when DH is more depressed, he complains that his back hurts. When he is in a good mood, he doesn't have pain. Some of Dr. Sarno's stuff teaches you how to de-stress yourself, etc. I hope you don't flame me for bringing this up, I thought it was B.S. when I first read about it, but I do think there is a connection.

And, of course, there is a "vicious circle", because the depression that causes the pain gets worse when you have pain, etc....

Sorry I don't have a link, but if you Google "Sarno back pain" you'll find lots of stuff.

Hope that helps a little....

Hello,

Dh hubby just went thru this (still recovering) it started about 4 months ago, pulled his back at first we thought is was a muscle but it wouldnt get better went to chiropractor (xrays dont show herinated disc) after a month of treatment and lots of ice packs it was improving then all of a sudden it went back to pain, he tried to go to work the next morning and had to turn around and come home with terrible pain (tears in his eyes) we went to the er and they ordered a mri. scheduled appt with spine specialist (sp) he saw the spine dr and he gave him pain meds and some kind of other imflamtory med. dh was doing better. then the back pain started to worsen again tried another chriopractor and took the copy of mri to him. he checked dh out and notice he was losing strength in his left foot (it called flop foot)he got on the phone with the spine dr and they got dh in the next day. by this time he was having sharp pains down the leg. the dr gave him 2 options pain meds and time like 6 months of dealing with the pain with the draw back of permanent damage to the nerve or surgery to remove the fragment of herniated disc that was pressing on the nevre. had the same day surgery the next day. the day after the surgery he was up and around feeling much better. it will be 3 weeks tomorrow since the surgery he is only allowed to left 15 pounds and bend at the knees not the waist in another 1 week he will start some excerises to strenghten his back. the dr said he will always be prone to on and off again bouts of back pain. good luck to you,

Sometimes if you go to the ER they will give you the necessary tests immmediately. Like an MRI. Dunno about a nerve conduction test tho.

I'd think you qualify that it's an emergency from your last post. That certainly is NOT normal.

I just hate it when a jerk clerk is the one to give permission for more tests and you have to wait sometimes weeks.

Best to you & keep us posted!

I would not wait to see a Dr,I would go right now, just in case its a disk pushing against your spinal cord, paralyzing your feelings down there.Don't wait,if thats the case, major nerves could be damaged permanently.Tell the Dr about you losing control,I think he'll go with the MRI,if he dosen't, change Drs.Thats just my opinion though,Eddie Buck
