Red face I've joined the ranks

Well, I've joined the ranks of the butcher-ers

I was moving my 5 week old chicks tonight in their move-able pen & had one straggler that got her neck broken

That has never happened to me before, so I was feeling pretty ugly about it

but dh suggested that I go ahead & butcher it (I will use it for soup tomorrow)

I have watched him do our older chickens but I've never done it myself

As he directed me tonight, I did it all by myself

It was nice practice since it was small & already dead & the feathers came out very easily since it was young

It was a bit emotional (like I said, I never had animal blood on my hands before) but it went well & I feel more confident now

My animal did not go to waste & if dh were not home & this would need to be done again, I could do it

Whoosh.....

Congratulations! I can only hope I could do as well in that same situation.

Good for you! I've found that it gets easier with practice. You'll feel even more confident next time.
