Touched by generosity at the auction barn.

I was touched by the generosity of a stranger tonight at the auction barn.

The auction barn here has sales every Wednesday night. This was our second time going. I went last week and the kids and I went this week. I was hoping to find more black raspberry bushes, but no luck.

Shane, my 11 year old, had $31 and wanted to buy a bike he found there. We just moved to our farm and before we moved, I got rid of all of the junker bikes. What I didn't notice is that I also got rid of his bike. Here he is on a new farm with no bike to ride. It was almost un-American. It was a NICE bike that he found. He checked it over (thank you Cub Scouts for going over this!) and staked it out. We stood by that bike for a good half an hour. He did NOT want to miss the auction!

Unfortunately the bidding went higher than his cash limit, so he dropped out. The bike went for $47.50. The new owner said, "Kid, I'll sell you this bike for $31". He then took $30 and told Shane to get a soda with the $1.

Needless to say, Shane was shocked. He said, "Mom, I wish this guy was our neighbor because he's so nice!"

I couldn't help but kick in another dollar and Shane got the guy a soda, too!

Talk about giving us a lift!

That was so generous. It was great that he noticed how much your son wanted it and what his top price was. Not many people pay that much attention to what is going on around them anymore.

Your son was right - you need neighbors like that

That's really good to hear that there are still folks such as that.

Please show your family the movie Pay it Forward. You will not only understand the wonderful gesture but will one day yourselves want to pay it forward to another. Another thread today reminded me of it.

Our town is having a community garage sale in 2 weeks. We just moved and have a ton of things that we didn't have time to go through before we moved so we drug it out here. Now that I'm unpacking I'm going to use this sale to get rid of our excess. Since I don't have the time to price everything out I'm doing to do a FREE sale. If they give a donation to the American Cancer Society they can take whatever they feel like taking. I'm also going to have a donation jar for my best friend who is battling stage 3, level 3 uterine cancer. She has 5 adopted special needs kids and wants to spend this summer making memories with them. I want to raise enough $$$ to pay for one night in a hotel so they can take a 2 day trip to Springfield, IL.

I'm very big on teaching the kids about thinking of others. In fact, Shane came home with a "Best Manners" award today! Then this happens. We've been talking about how the two are tied together.

Been home and in the hospital lately..not working..knowing what it is like to live with.."no income"..don't expect but a very small amount from disability when it does arrive for the next couple of months but...Yes..lately I have noticed how kind most people are. Yes..there are the exceptions..but I honestly do think that people are kind and generous by nature. Perhaps it is I seem to have the time to take notice of people and the little things that they do that just might make someone's day better. when working we are all so very busy to notice the little things in life. It certainly has gotten me to pay closer attention to my attitude to people and take that second to say "Good Morning" to strangers as I do my daily hospital visits. I am so happy that your boy has found out early in life that people do help others..it is a true blessing to be the giver or the one that is given that gift..Tell him to just pass it on when he can in some small way.

There are an awfully lot of really nice people out there but with all the bad stuff on the news all the time we forget the good things till we read nice stories like yours.
I agree with the other poster that said your son will remember this the rest of his life.

Thanks for sharing this story with us. I am sure this is one action that your son will remember forever! Who knows what small acts of kindness can do in the lives of others? What a marvelous example for the rest of us!
