grinding corn?

If you grind corn, does that make cornmeal?

I know that is a really dumb question, just tryig to figure out what to do with ground corn...

It might depend on just how finely it is ground. If it is very course, it might be cracked corn - somewhat finer would be cornmeal and very fine would be corn flour. Hope this helps. I realize that it isn't very exact, but so much depends on how fine the grind.

Oh, that REALLY helps!

Ok, next dumb question-- do you use regular popping type popcorn or the corn feed stuff you see at walmart and feed stores???

I don't know what most people use but I use the popping style corn. Popcorn is one of my family's favorites so I always have it on hand. Pretty easy for me to just throw a few handfulls in the grinder. Comes out looking good and looks like the stuff you can buy.

I use filed corn never tried popcorn. Seems to me like the popcorn hull is tougher than the field corn hull but byf must know best.

NB (note well): do NOT grind your corn in a stone grinder. The oil gums up the stone and you have to bake it at the highest setting (a kiln would be better than an oven) and spend a long time chipping out corn from the etching on the stone with a nutpick. BTDT- get steel burrs for corn! And peanuts etc I assume- never ground them though.

I wouldn't use feed store corn -- at least not the stuff meant to be animal feed, as it's processed differently (it might not be as clean as I'd want it). I CERTAINLY wouldn't use seed corn, as much of it is treated.

The place I buy some of my dry goods from has both popping corn, and corn meant for grinding, but you CAN use popping corn for cornmeal.

it will work in a vitamix..might in a regular flour grinder..

Here Dent corn is used for meal. Reid's Yellow Dent is a favorite variety, Nothstine is another. Folks can get pretty serious about corn meal, mixing in a proprtion of sweet corn, only using certain varieties of corn, etc.

yellow field corn, (dent corn) dryed properly for grinding makes a good corn meal for critter feed or a particular processed bottled product. Or if not ground fine it makes cracked corn as mentioned above. For good household corn meal, I like a white corn, preferably Hickory King which is an old timey open pollenated corn, but can be a real bugger to keep some for yourself as the crows seem to dearly love it above any others. I also like to grind a small amount of Hickory King after sprouting it to make malt to blend in with the yellow corn for the bottled corn. It gives it a nice mellow corn flavor.

It depends on the coarseness of the grind. It could be cornflour which is fine, or cornmeal which varies depending on the grind. Whatever you do with it corn flour/meal is very perishable and can turn rancid if not stored properly. Freezing is the best way to keep it fresh.
