Guess what I saw today?

I had to drive over South Mountain to go to a bank and when I came down the mountain and was driving thru Burkittsville, which is the town made famous by the Blair Witch movie, I saw, NO, not the Blair Witch, something much better.
A Black squirrel, it was so pretty. I at first thought it was a black kitty running in front of me because it was raining so hard it was hard to see, but then it ran up the tree next to the road and I could see it clearly. It was sable black and so beautiful. Has anyone else seen one before?

Yes and they are lovely. I believe it's a growth phase of the grey squirrel?

I once saw an albino squirrel, funny thing is, I saw it at the National Zoo in DC, but it was not a zoo animal, just a wild one who happened to be on the zoo grounds.

We have thousands of squirrels in our town. Black, brown and greys. You can come get some of ours! We're over-populated.

I have seen one before in Michigan, not sure if it is a different species or just a growth phase.

I think it's odd that the most black (of the "grey" variety) squirrels we ever see are in the cemetary. They surely are neat looking. DH & I just love squirrels!

I think most squirrels start out black. Then, with age, they turn into grey squirrels. At least that's the way it works with my family.

I see 2 of them every morning outside my kitchen window looking for handouts. We have black ones and brown ones and grayish ones. Some seem to be combinations of all of that.

Our daughter has a black squirrel that live in the tree in her backyard. I believe they are their own genetic strain. We also have red squirrels. Back East, the squirrels are gray. I never saw a red or black one until moving to Iowa.

I've seen black ones in the DC area but none here though at work the other week the other staff people were talking about black ones migrating here.

Blacks are more common than greys up here - genetically, they're all "grey squirrels", the blacks are just a colour variant.

We went to a carving museum in Dover, OH (very neat place) and they had black squirrels all over outside. I had never seen one before. Then in a little town my husband drives through on the way to work, they have a house my Sister-in-law took me to and we waited and watched and they had a couple of white albino squirrels.

They abound near Niagra Falls...and in Columbus, Ohio...there are some pockets in town where they exist, but mostly grey squirrels everywhere. They do appear pretty, but that might be due to the fact that I see them so rarely.

The Blair Witch Project was shot right here in Woodstock, MD, right behind my house. The house used was an old abandoned one back in the woods. They had to tear it down after the movie because of the unwanted "tourism." We all got...well, a little looped one halloween and hiked back out there in the pitch black with just a flashlight while the house was still standing. It was eerie. The thing I kept saying was, "Geesh, how lost could they be? The main road is about 1/2 mile over THERE!" We trail ride back there all the time. My "brush with greatness," lol.

Yes, but they called it Burkittsville, which is wasn't, the town of Burkittsville is one long street that comes off South Mt. and that's it. That town got ransacked by movie fans also. There are only houses in that town and now Black squirrels!!

I read that 18 black squirrels were given to the D.C. zoo during President Roosevelts' term and some escaped and have made their way around Maryland and Virginia. So maybe they finally came up to Frederick Co.
